DJ Nobu announces ‘Shō’ EP on fabric Originals
The Japanese techno selector-producer turns inward for a five-track meditation on Buddhist philosophy, out 27th March.
DJ Nobu has announced his new EP Shō on fabric Originals, a record that marks something of a personal turning point for the revered Tokyo-based artist. Each of the five tracks corresponds to one of the Brahmavihāras – Buddhism’s four ‘Sublime States’ of being: Muditā (joy), Karuṇā (compassion), Mettā (loving-kindness) and Upekkhā (equanimity) – with a fifth track, Tathātā, added as a vinyl exclusive.
The backstory is quietly affecting. Nobu has spoken about becoming overwhelmed by the noise of daily life in recent years, finding in meditation – and eventually Buddhism – a way to reconnect with himself. The EP is the sonic document of that process, rooted in Tokyo’s specific geography and the textures of his own emotional recovery.
“In recent years, I became overly sensitive to my surroundings and society,” Nobu explains. “Through this, my sensibilities became able to express themselves more naturally.”
Across the record, the music traces an arc from emergence to acceptance. The opening track, Mudita, captures, in Nobu’s words, the sensation of crawling out of a murky swamp; Karuna marks the moment he stepped toward the light, informed in part by his proximity to the Tokyo locations used in Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days. By Metta, the heart has expanded. Upekkha settles into Glassian repetition. Tathātā, closing the record, is where all of it dissolves into pure presence and movement.
"In recent years I became overly sensitive to my surroundings and society."
The EP title – Shō – denotes views and actions aligned with Buddhist truth. It’s a serious, considered piece of work from one of techno’s most quietly authoritative figures, and a reminder that the best music in this space has always had an interior life.
Nobu plays fabric Continuum on 28th March alongside Call Super, DJ Masda, Channel One, Craig Richards and Donna Leake.
Shō is out 27th March on fabric Originals via vinyl, download and stream.
