The Kaifeng-born, London-based artist returns with her most ambitious project yet – featuring Seefeel, Dip In The Pool and Memotone.

Yu Su has shared ‘A Jewel’, the lead single from her forthcoming album Foundry, out May 1st on Short Span Records. The track features Miyako Koda of cult Japanese art pop duo Dip In The Pool, opening the record in swirling but poised fashion – a duet that sets the tone for an album built on unlikely but inspired creative chemistry.

Foundry – named for the shared workspace where collaborators combine their materials and skills – marks a bold evolution from her 2021 debut LP. Its nucleus grew from material written for a live performance at MUTEK in 2025, and a move to London that brought fresh shifts in perspective. Searching for a sound that is both true to her roots and her forward momentum, Yu Su ventured into a post-orientalist direction, arriving at what she describes as a language of ‘in-between music’: dusky, dub-inflected, minimal and ambient, but never easily categorised.

The results speak for themselves. ‘Sunless’, featuring British composer Memotone, channels the reverberant underwater minimalism of Chris Marker’s 1983 film Sans Soleil. ‘One Place After Another’ enlists Seefeel, weaving Yu’s voice alongside Sarah Peacock’s and Mark Clifford’s seductively gauzy fuzz guitar. Elsewhere, the thumping acid stomp of the title track, the liminal ambient dub of ‘Wanli’ and the reflective closing pulse of ‘Ripe Fruits’ – inspired by Frederic Leighton’s 1892 painting The Garden of the Hesperides – round out a record of genuine breadth and ambition.

The album arrives pressed on 875°C-tempered orange vinyl, with cover art featuring hammered metalwork by artist Brendan Ratzlaff and visual art direction by Lucas Dupuy. “We both think in layers,” Yu says of their collaboration. “Not linear layering, but horizontal layering, like weaving metallic threads, where a bigger picture of a grainy sphere will occur at the end.”

It’s the latest chapter in a restless creative journey for an artist who has consistently defied easy categorisation. Her intricate melodies and dreamlike soundscapes – with subtle nods to Chinese folk tradition – have seen her work alongside John Carroll Kirby and Duval Timothy, and contribute remixes for Parquet Courts and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. She also co-founded bié, a label born out of a 2019 tour through mainland China – from Qingdao to Xining – set up to platform the artists she met along the way. As a DJ, she’s a regular fixture at Dekmantel, Glastonbury, Panorama Bar, Phonox, Nuits Sonores, iii Points and Rainbow Disco Club.
