Alphonse & Seraphina Simone finally share “Spirit of the Night” on Ransom Note Recs

Some records take their time. This one took nine years.

“Spirit of the Night” began at Glastonbury in 2017, when Toby Tobias — the producer behind the Alphonse alias – crossed paths with vocalist Seraphina Simone.

The pair knocked out a set of lyrics over a single session, the kind of easy creative collision that feels like it should be simple to finish. It wasn’t.

Life did what life does – lockdowns, a baby, other projects – and the track drifted through several incarnations before Toby finally zeroed in on what it actually was: a late-night acid house record built around a snaking 303 line and Seraphina’s unmistakable vocals.

The result is the Main Mix – raw acid wave, heavy on vocals, the original 2017 idea more or less intact. Sometimes the long way round is the right way round.

Alphonse has released on Klasse Wrecks, Hypercolour, Emotional Especial and Kalahari Oyster Cult. Seraphina Simone brings her own formidable CV to the table – solo EPs, credits alongside Becky Hill and Robyn – and is currently doing her thing as vocalist and dancer in Self Esteem’s live band.
