Tiefschwarz – 8 Tracks

Music

Around 12 years ago some of us at Ransom Note Towers used to run a club night in a pub full of stuffed animals where all the bar staff- every last one of them- were of a pensionable age. They'd gamely pour pints, these old dears with shaky hands, whilst being barely cognitive of the techno and grime records banging out of their creaking soundsystem. One year we had a New Years Eve party where we played with the pub's house band. The piano player was blind, the drummer had a wooden leg, and their repertoire was a mix of risque songs about shagging young girls and bad Oasis covers. They were great, and we knew they'd set the bar pretty high. When we played, we had a secret weapon- the Tiefschwarz remix of Spektrum's Kinda New. Spektrum were a local band, and everyone in the place loved em. Tiefschwartz had taken their post punk groove and turned it into a fucking belter of techno and attitude that would tear the roof off. And really, Tiefschwartz have been making bangers ever since. Brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz have been producing for almost 20 years now. They run their own label, Souvenir, DJ like legends, and are heading to London to appear on Friday 27th March at Bloc's East London rave shed. So go and see them.

Here's 8 tracks the brothers find inspirational. And yeah, there's Phil Collins at Band Aid in there.

Tiefschwarz's new album "Left" comes out on 1st June on Watergate Records.

  • In A Manner Of Speaking - Tuxedomoon

Tuxedomoon is an experimental, post-punk, new wave band from San Francisco. This song means a lot to us. This song was released only as a live bootleg sung by Winston Tong in 1985’s Holy Wars album and was later covered by Martin Gore, Nouvelle Vague and Amanda Palmer and remains his best known song.

  • Khan Feat. Julee Cruise - Say Goodbye (Losoul Shes Homeless Mix)

This one is one of all time faves. Released in 2003 on Ata’s label Playhouse Records. We think we’ve played this song maybe a million times. We love Khan so much, that’s why we recorded our new album with him. Can’t wait to share with you!

  • A Number Of Names 'Sharevari' (Capriccio 1981)

‘Sharevari’ was a locally produced dance party hit in Detroit in the early 1980s. Did you ever experience the Dark Disco Dance Rave with Ali?

  • Phil Collins - Against All Odds - Live Aid 1985 - London, England

Phil Collins performing ‘Against All Odds’ during Live Aid at Wembley Stadium, London, England, July 13, 1985. It is a power ballad in which its protagonist implores an ex-lover to “take a look at me now”, knowing that reconciliation is “against all odds” while considering it worth trying. This song and Collins’ live performance at Live Aid is one of the best pop moments ever.

  • Depeche Mode Blasphemous Rumors 101 Live

From the101 is a live album and documentary by Depeche Mode released in 1989 chronicling the final leg of the band’s “Music for the Masses” tour and the final show at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. We picked this live video because this performance is unbelievably breathtaking. DM 4 ever <3

  • Roman Flugel - Wilkie

Does anybody needs an introduction to Roman Flügel? Not really? Ok, Roman is a german electronic music producer based in Frankfurt. He is co-founder of Ongaku Musik, Klang Elektronik and Playhouse. For our playlist we picked ‘Wilkie’ from his last album Happiness Is Happening released on Dial Records in 2014. We are so happy he did a remix for our upcoming album release. Happy Tiefschwarz.

  • Dauwd - Lydia 'Kindlinn' Ep

As soon as we listened to Dauwd’s ‘Lydia’ for the first time we fell in love with his music. His productions are full and intricate with a wealth of sounds building warm atmospheres that are unusual within dance music. Watch out Berlin!
