F.M. aka (François Marché) and Fa_Fane (Stéphane Bodin), of the most excellent Froid Dub marked their debut release on Ransom Note Records with ‘Tears Maker Chant’ recently, bringing their amazing dubbed-out blend of laid-back intensity. Below they break down the album Track By Track.

Across the six-track exploration, the Parisian duo – who run the equally excellent Delodio label – create movement at slower tempos ‘whilst keeping the expansiveness intact.’

“Each track has its own personality, its own story,” explains the duo. “We see them almost as characters – some are trying to intimidate, others are looking for comfort, some are dealing with anger or sadness.” It’s a record that bears repeated listens where you find the intricate sonic spaces unravel from the 70bpm opening to the 105bpm finale.

With all that hyperbole in mind, let’s dive into each track and the stories behind them by way of words and pictures.

Note: There’s remixes incoming from Richard Fearless, Lena Willikens, Rug Dug, Tia Cousins, Zillas On Acid, Tolouse Low Tax, Timothy Clerkin and Vacant Heads. Full details at the bottom right here. Have a look see.

Just One – 3mn46 – 70bpm

Dark brown / JBL speaker wood

Just one is covered with dead stars and doesn’t even know it. He does the big voice to intimidate the neighbourhood dogs, but in fact he’s the coolest of the bunch. That’s his strength and his weakness, which is why he opens the album. The other tracks put it at the top of the tracklisting, thinking that his big voice would chill potential fighters and that his ability to talk would show the way to dialogue. If ever friends came along…. Like the others, he waited for the autumn door to close, praying that this time it would be summer that would arrive instead of winter and break the logic of the seasons that invariably go by like the list of pizzas on the menu of a Italian restaurant. But, hidden deep inside his hoodie he tries to forget that deep down he actually loves hip hop.

On The Nose – 3mn30 – 75bpm

Rose / Toilet paper from an 80s in a motorway station

On the Nose is an X, a tunnel covered in comfortable, moist plush where you settle in. It’s nice and cosy, but you keep an eye on the end of the tunnel because it’s hard to really appreciate how far you are from the exit. A jet lag journey. A pleasant hangover. An orgasm in slow motion. Tired, and having come back from a lot of things, You won’t believe it , he still has a deep desire to see a little more. To find that little moment between awake and asleep, between death and rigor mortis, between synth and pop. A springtime breach that would open the door to surprises.

Digital Pond – 4mn53 -80bpm

Green/ yellow / blue / A small enamel bowl from the 70s found at a flea market.

The leaves that fall on the Marais Poitevin will eventually rot after the winter thaw and settle to the bottom of the water. This rotting will feed the soil with trace elements that will help the trees to grow, producing fruit that will feed insects. From the brown will come the green of the trees, the yellow of the apples and the blue of the sky into which the ladybirds will fly. From the decay of this last day of autumn will come life. The frogs singing at the beginning of the track were recorded in Martinique with a Zoom portable recorder H1.

4 – Control ( special mix ) – 3mn06 – 85bpm

Yellow / Orange / A not too ripe pomelo.

Eating a citrus-dominated fruit salad in the sunset of a 1981 or 1988 New York fantasy. The date is illegible on the packet … But like all good fantasies that come true, not everything goes according to plan and the rhythm turns upside down…. It’s synthetic, rejects the ambient bulimia and says stop once it’s filled 3 tracks with music. You can’t even do that! Yes, I can, I’ve just done it, I bounced the track without the beat. I’m glad you did it.

Tears Maker – 3mn13 – 105bpm

Green / brown / A jacket from the movie The Guns of Navarone

gunnavgpduffel-cl1-coat2 copy

He’s trying to do a percussion take but the neighbour is practising his violin and the sound is pissing at the bottom of his recordings. No problem, it adds texture. His chin trembles. Anger in one, then sadness in two. It has a new resonance. Maybe it’s because this resonator plugin was opened by mistake on Ableton live. Please don’t touch anything, it’s great like that. As for « Control », who was originally intended for another project, he did everything he could to stay with the Froid Dub family. Thanks to him for his tenacity. To thank you, we’re going to name the album after you, as well as a little puddle of water in the studio’s ever-growing toilet drain.

Terri’s Dub – 3mn30 – 105bpm

Iridescent brown / Sun and water on the skin lying on a beach in Barbados.

unnamed (3)

Terri has two passions, salty water and alcohol. She combines the two as often as possible, and as soon as summer comes she flees her native Manchester and the continent of Europe to get drunk on the spray of the Caribbean Sea. Push it, punch it. The sound of the waves in the distance whispers in her ear. And as she lies on the sand, his brain rattles from idea to idea, doing everything to avoid thinking about certain files that would spoil his day. Another drink, the more I drink, the clearer I get. The more I drink, the more I dance. The more I drink, the less I walk straight… The more friends I have, the more problems I have. That’s it, her brain has slipped, she has to pull herself together. Sometimes waking up from a nap is less pleasant than the nap itself. Now she tries to reach the sea by jumping from one foot to the other.
