This Soft Machine’s 8 TRACKS OF Machine-Driven Sounds

Music

Born in Australia, brought up in Japan and now residing in Germany – it's fair to say that This Soft Machine has a pretty worldly outlook on things. With musical influences including the likes of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Ramones, the debut outing this week via Eskimo Recordings sees a first foray into the higher echelons. We asked him if he could recommend some machine-driven sounds for us and, as you can see for yourself, he delivered.

His picks are also available as a Spotify playlist here.

This Soft Machine releases 'On & On / This Place Was Meant For Me' on Eskimo Recordings on 13th April and is featured on The Orange Collection out May 4th.

Paul Mccartney - Mccartney Ii: Check My Machine

A bonus track from the “McCartney II” record. His use of synthesizers and drums machines on this album produced in my opinion the best work from Sir McCartney. It’s always intriguing to hear the experimental side of any musician, especially “A Beatle”.

  • Paul Mccartney - Mccartney Ii: Check My Machine

  • Sonic Youth - Washing Machine (1995)

This track still has as much raw power and attitude as the day I heard it in the high school music room at lunch time. I’m super grateful for all my older friends for showing me such amazing bands when I was younger.

  • Supermax Top 1000 Lovemachine Live

MASSIVE jam from Supermax. A lot of great memories of dancing to this track on summer days with friends. R.I.P Kurt Haienstein!

  • Thalys Area - Metro Area - Machine Vibes

Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani have had a huge influence on me. Hearing Erol Alkan play “Miura” as a teenager at Trash Club in London really added the “dance” genre to my 18 year old “punk” brain. Oh, and their Fabric Mix is ridiculously good.

  • The Jackson 5 - Dancing Machine (Henrik Schwarz Remix) [Audio Hq] Hd

This is a class in what I like to call “Musical Mathematics”. The Jackson 5 + Henrik Schwarz = If your feet don’t move, you have no soul.

  • The Mean Machine - Disco Dream (1981)

Sampling Grace Jones’ “Pull Up To The Bumper” is pretty much a no-go zone. Alas, The Mean Machine proved us all wrong with a real party starter hip hop jam in “Disco Dream”.

  • Mr. Fingers - Washing Machine

A true classic cut on Trax Records from Larry Heard. This track is almost 30 years old?! And is still teaching the dance floor some serious lessons.

  • Munich Machine - 02 - The Munich Machine Medley

Munich Machine was a studio project produced by Giorgio Moroder between 77-79. They made 3 fully charged disco albums. The audio in the video is the classic old disco idea of creating an insane “15min+ whole side of the record medley” of all the tracks on the album. The musicianship is unbelievable! So much soul and the untouchable production of Moroder makes for a lot of inspiration.
