Space Is The Place with Otik

Music

Bristolian producer Otik is a name that's been constantly popping up on our radar of late. Since he debuted on Brotherhood Sound System six years ago he's been steadily building up a healthy catalogue and refining his distinct take on club music and UK techno.

With previous releases for the likes of Dext Recordings, Keysound, Boogie Box and Nous, as well as remixes for Dusky, Paleman, Cabasa and more under his belt, we're sure we can expect plenty more exciting productions to come from the Otik camp in the future.

He looks set to take this year by storm already with two solo EPs penned for release in the next few months. He'll be making a home at Mr. Mitch's Gobstopper Records soon, but before that his melodic rhythms will see the light of day via Midland's InterGraded imprint next week.

Ahead of the release and with outer space in mind, he selects some of the tracks that beam him up into the cosmos…

“I chose this theme mainly due to the concept of space being a strong influence for me in music. It’s something I picture and think about a lot when making my own stuff and listening to others. Plus I watch a bunch of films and documentaries based around it, so I naturally end up sampling scores or trying to emulate that essence in my tunes and DJ sets.”

Onoe Caponoe - Moon (Galactico)

Onoe’s music has always had a theme of outer space running through it, but this one really paints a mental image of gliding through the cosmos. Chemo’s ethereal production style compliments the vocals so well, and the movement of the drums feels like a voyage through the galaxy.

  • Terekke - Nuwav2

This is probably one of my favourite pieces of music ever made. I mainly listen to it when I’m trying to sleep or meditate. It’s a beautiful track that instantly relaxes me – I always picture myself floating effortlessly above the atmosphere, and it does the trick every time. The delicate execution of every synth in this tune sounds otherworldly to me.

  • Braids - Sweet World

There’s an energy to Braids’ music that feels not of this earth, and this track in particular just hurtles me through the stars whenever I hear it. The song moves quickly, but there’s so much room and depth to it, plus Raphaelle Standell-Preston’s angelic adlibs are haunting, as though they’re lost in space.

  • Burial - Nightmarket

I immediately think of Bladerunner when I hear this tune. Everything about the track reminds me of space – from the cosmic arps and pads, to the ghostly vocals and effects that sound like alien transmissions. The song seems to climb as though the listener is travelling further and further into deep space, until they reach the end of their journey, and step off the shuttle onto a foreign planet.

  • Zbigniew Preisner - Lacrimosa

This one is sort of cheating because it’s a song from my favourite scene from my favourite movie, The Tree of Life. The scene portrays the Big Bang and the viewer witnesses the cosmos being created, it’s mesmerising to watch. But the music is extremely fitting, and pretty unnerving. It somehow manages to perfectly capture the essence of the most important moment of all time, but it also haunts me and I can’t quite put my finger on why…
