Rodriguez Jr’s 8 Tracks Of Inspiration & Foundation

Music

While working on new material, I love looking back to my roots in order to find new inspirations. Here are some track which have contributed to making my music what it is.

Rodriguez Jr. plays Defected in the House NYE at Ministry of Sound on 31 December.

Rodriguez Jr.’s remix of Henry Saiz’s ‘Haunted Girl’ is out now on Suara.

Kraftwerk - The Man Machine

I must start with a classic. This is the definition of what a hypnotic groove is. These German dudes were so ahead of their times that they became the most influential band ever, defining the music of the last three decades.

  • Jean Michel Jarre - Equinoxe Part 2

As a French kid, this album was the first contact I ever had with electronic sounds. I borrowed the vinyl from the family collection and have been instantly hooked by the slow ever-evolving soundscapes. Mesmerising. Loving this twist of French romanticism in Jarre’s music.

  • 808 State - Pacific State

A very important track in my path. I guess their aim was to bring some deep emotional charge to a dancefloor track… exactly what I am still trying to do nowadays.

  • Advance - Lfo (Hq)

I basically used to buy any release form Warp Records as they’ve been the pushing boundaries of electronic music since the early 90s. Bell and Varley were one of their first signatures, bringing a lot of innovative ideas to modern dance music. This one is all about an ever-evolving filtered beat. The huge drop with the bouncing synth sequence is just awesome.

  • Boards Of Canada - Alpha And Omega - Hd

Their music reminds me of stories of Patrick Modiano, who is my favourite writer: it’s all about souvenirs, vanishing memories, time and contemplation.

  • House Syndicate - Jam The Mace [Kenny Dope Gonzalez]

Kenny Dope Gonzalez – what a legend. That’s the definition of house. Fat, nasty, dirty… I went nuts the first time I heard it in a Garnier set and I remember it’s been so hard to get a vinyl copy of this bootleg back in the days.

  • World 2 World (Underground Resistance) - Amazon

Amazon is such a big anthem. The techno from Detroit is a bridge between the black funk music from the US and our European electronic culture. Pure science fiction.

  • Matthew Herbert - Leave Me Now

I am finishing this selection with another forward thinking artist Matthew Herbert, who I really respect. Blending jazz and electronic experiments with a very sensible aesthetic and absolutely no compromises on both writing and production.
