Influences – Leftfield

Music

Neil Barnes of Leftfield has been so kind as to offer us an insight into some of his musical influences. Earlier this year saw the first Leftfield release in over a decade and the relevance of the project feels as vital to the Electronic music community as ever.
Barnes and Leftfield play alongside a cast of likeminded musicians on the night including Martyn, Hodge & Paranoid London, some of which feature in Barnes influences themselves.

Leftfield play Live at The Warehouse Project on the 12th of December. Tickets are available HERE

Timmy Thomas - Why Can't We Live Together

A timeless classic and a massive influence on me. I love the minimal and brave nature of the production. I also own the same Roland drum machine.

  • Timmy Thomas - Why Can't We Live Together

A timeless classic and a massive influence on me. I love the minimal and brave nature of the production. I also own the same Roland drum machine.

  • Joy Division - Shadowplay

Quite simply the greatest Live band I’ve ever seen, period. They were unique in so many ways, never the same always experimenting, just brilliant. I’ve spent my whole career trying to emulate them.

  • Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock

The record that changed our lives. This introduced me to the power of the Linn Drum and made me give up guitars, and music for 8 years.

  • Cybotron - Clear

Another classic from this era. Juan Atkins was in Cybotron, again minimal brilliance and early techno ideas, big influence, my vinyl copy has worn out.

  • Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full

Another life changing record, introducing world music namely Offra Hussar into hip hop was something that I was thinking about and this showed me the power of samplers: and the possibility of using them creatively.

  • Renegade Soundwave - Thunder

One of the most important and massively underrated of acts, we all owe them a massive debt.
I’m proud that we remixed them.

  • Joey Beltram - Energy Flash

Still doing the business, a timeless classic and still playing this one out

  • Lion Rock - Lionrock

Another banger from the 90’s, a great record..

  • Paranoid London - Eating Glue

Playing on the same bill at the Manchester Warehouse Project. Possibly the most interesting act around at the moment, a direct link to dirty House & Acid music of the past no doubt, love them.

  • Hodge - Mind Games

Also at WHP, one of the most interesting artists to emerge out of Bristol recently. Love this slice of techno, sort of madly African in its own way. Hodge also recently remixed Leftfield.
