KNZ: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

We know we’re always hyping on about Atlanta’s underground electronic music scene, and you know why? Because it’s very very good.

While DJs and producers like Ash Lauryn, Stefan Ringer and Kai Alce are among those leading the charge, there’s a host of other artists, creatives, parties and labels bubbling up across the city, more of which you can read about in our spotlight piece.

Thanks to a tip from Zaida, who did a banging mix for us at the beginning of the year, we were introduced to the sounds of KNZ. A visual artist and DJ, her musical discoveries are driven by her love of deep house, afrohouse and techno; she’s always searching for ‘house beats that resonate’.

Listening to her mixes, there’s a fluidity to her style that’s enchanting; a quality that extends to her “space mango berry mix” for us. KNZ might be just beginning her journey, but we see nothing but a bright future ahead of her…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

My name is KNZ, I’m a chill young lady in Atlanta.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Most of my music is on the deep house side, but I love to mix in afrohouse and techno, really anything with a house beat that resonates.

Where was the mix recorded?

This mix was recorded in my little studio space in a garage.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In a rave somewhere in space.

What should we be wearing?

Cool colors, and some loose pants and comfortable shoes to really be able to dance.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Somewhere in nature on a CDJ or a Pioneer XDJ-RX2.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Space Ghost feat. Morgan, “Sim City”

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Besides my mix Liquid Summer, I really enjoy RA.688 by Ash Lauryn.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Ash Lauryn, just because she inspires me so much.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

My first set up was in my room in my parent’s house, now I have my own cute little studio.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The start.

What were the first and last records you bought?

FWM by Stefan Ringer is my first and my last that I have actually bought.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

It would taste like a blueberry, blackberry, and acai smoothie bowl with mango and strawberries.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A lionfish.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Resonances by Lalo Schriffin.

Upcoming in the world of KNZ…

Definitely more mixes are coming and a new logo. I’m also starting to explore creating my own music.

Anything else we need to discuss?

I’m also a visual artist! I’m so thankful to have done this mix for yall!
