Juncheol: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

We first crossed paths with Juncheol on Nyapi’s rooftop during the Ransom Note Asia tour.

A heavy vinyl digger and Nyapi resident, he’s carved his own path through late-night listening sessions.

His sets weave through percussive detours, raw rhythms and imperfect textures, always creating a high energy dance.

Through his Somewhere mix series and steady presence in the booth, Juncheol keeps Seoul’s underground plugged into a wider frequency, pulling local heads and distant artists together.

Juncheol moves at his own tempo.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

My name is Juncheol. I was born in Seoul and have lived here my whole life. During the week, I work as a DJ tutor at Studio Namsan in Myeong-dong, and on weekends I play music at club Nyapi.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

I recorded it at home using only vinyl.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

At the very top of a tall lighthouse by the sea.

What should we be wearing?

A spacesuit-like diving suit.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

I think the best environment to record a mix is directly in the club, in the middle of the action.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Donato Dozzy – Metal Slave

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Powder – at Cocktail d’Amore December 2016

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Probably Donato Dozzy.
There’s something about the way he locks into a groove without forcing anything.
A B2B with him would just be about staying in that zone and letting the room fall into it with us.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

I started out with a CDJ-800MK2 and a DJM-600. I still remember buying my first setup right after seeing an older friend play only with CDs — it made me want my own gear straight away.

Now I use two Technics MK5s and a Rodec MX180 MK2. It’s a rough, hands-on setup. Just the sound, the needle, and whatever mood the day brings.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

I’ve never really thought about what’s supposed to be more important. For me, what matters is that the whole journey—from the first track to the last—says what I want to say.

What were the first and last records you bought?

The first record I bought was a ‘MONDO GROSSO’ album, but I can’t remember exactly which one it was.”Mike Parker & Donato Dozzy – Excavations E.P.” This is the most recent record I bought.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A salty ocean-water taste.

If it was an animal what would it be?

Crocodile.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Hmm… none, actually.

Upcoming in the world of…

I want to keep doing this consistently, and I’m always thinking about how I should move forward to make that possible.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Have a great day!!!
