Autumns: The Ransom Note Mix
Post-punk provocateur Autumns has been catapulting angular weapons over the ramparts since 2014…
Carving out a fierce reputation across labels like Downwards, Opal Tapes, iDEAL Recordings and DKA Records. Christian Donaghey’s relentless live show has seen him tour worldwide alongside Veronica Vasicka, Silent Servant, and Wire, delivering workouts that pummel those lower frequencies into submission.
Now, as he joins Ransom Note with the ferocious EP ‘Through the Construction of Grace’ EP, the “lanky, ginger man from Derry” offers up a mix that captures his intuitive approach to music-making. Recorded in his bedroom, it’s a journey through the sounds that have shaped Autumns’ “awful attempts at ripping off every bit of music that I like” from DJ Hell & Alan Vega collaborations to deep Post-Punk in Dub territory.
It’s confusing, distorted vocals and atonal blasts that taste like marmalade, and moves with the scrappy resourcefulness of a raccoon.
Worry less. Listen intuitively.
Let’s get go…
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you
Autumns
Derry.
A lanky, ginger man.
What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
Awful attempts at ripping off every bit of music that I like.
I’d love for it to look like a Cy Twombly painting, but it probably looks like a Goodfellas Pizza.
How does your brain work when making music?
Intuitively.
How does it work when you aren’t?
Worry.
What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?
I think it was when my Da was blasting Windowlicker by Aphex Twin in the house. But I also think it could have been a Depeche Mode or Soft Cell song. I was completely confused but intrigued by Aphex Twin, I couldn’t then and still can’t be arsed with Depeche Mode and I’ve always loved Soft Cell.
Where was the mix recorded?
Bedroom in Derry.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
Bedroom in Derry.
What should we be wearing?
Just whatever is comfy.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Whatever bedroom I’m currently making my music in and pulling my records off the shelf.
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
Probably the DJ Hell & Alan Vega tune.
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
There’s a really good Post-Punk in Dub mix on NTS that I always go back to.
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why
Not a DJ, but it would have to be Mark Stewart because I know I’ll not know 95% of what he’s playing and it will probably all change my life.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
I’ve never had one. I just rip my records and play one tune after another.
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
Track you start with.
What were the first and last records you bought?
First: Nirvana – Nevermind and Daft Punk – Discovery (bought on the same day). Last: Muslimgauze – Hammer & Sickle.
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Marmalade.
If it was an animal what would it be?
Raccoon.
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
No song is impossible to mix.
Through the Construction of Grace is out now on Ransom Note
