8 Tracks: Of South African House With Jazzuelle

Music

Born and raised in South Africa and residing in Johannesburg following several years studying in Cape Town, Thando Tshoma – Jazzuelle, to the world of music – wasted no time in planting his unique flag atop the mountain of deep house that is the saturated global market for the genre.

Since 2010, his stellar dancefloor cuts have seen him release on an assortment of labels of ascendant size and reputation, culminating in the 2017 release of his debut album, Circles, on Berlin's Get Physical. Ahead of the August 24th release of his sophomore LP Rebirth, also on Get Physical, we caught up with the RBMA bass camp alumnus to get the scoop on the finest house his home country has to offer today.

Rebirth is out on all formats via Get Physical on August 28th. Preorder HERE.

Afro Warriors Ft. Toshi - Uyankenteza (Fka Mash Glitch Dub)

I heard this jam whilst looking for new music on YouTube and it’s never left my computer. I have played it out a few times at my shows and it’s had a brilliant response, this kid is young, hungry and talented. He’s done the rounds on a few labels and is already making a name for himself, definitely one of my favourite artists at the moment.

I heard this jam whilst looking for new music on YouTube and it’s never left my computer. • Myazisto - Lublin

Myazisto is dubbed South Africa’s own Stimming and this tune stands out for me from him, not the easiest of tunes to mix but the progression here nails you in like a nail on wood. I’ve played this a few times during my sets and even on live television shows and it’s always had a big response.

  • Bruce Loko - Catalyst

Bruce and I go way back, when we released music with Atjazz record company, to releasing music on Get Physical Music as well. We have a similar sound and he always surprises me. This jam is a track he did for Stay True Sounds in South Africa. I’ve played this during my set at the Get Physical Music office in Berlin for our Get Physical Sessions and it’s really got a huge response since then, just as with most of his beats, but this one is definitely of my favourites.

  • Jullian Gomes (Feat Sio) - 1000 Memories

A beautiful song by one of South Africa’s finest, Jullian is no stranger to the scene in South Africa. He’s been around for some time and we’ve been mates for a while now. This jam he did with Sio was one of the biggest from his new album, a tune that rocked crowds right across the scene, from the underground transcending to the commercial scene and radio.

  • Jazzuelle Feat. Da Capo - Blood Moon

Da Capo and I met by chance one day when we travelled together in the same car and I’ve known him since. We hooked up one night, on the night of a blood moon outside and wrote this tune. I featured it on my first album, Circles, he worked his magic on itm and it became an instant hit in the underground scene in South Africa.

  • Brewed Souls - The Arsenal

I’ve just discovered Brewed Souls, this jam was released recenty on the new House Afrika 8 complilation. I was looking for new music to play at a gig and this jam blew my mind, such an amazing tune, showcasing the talent in South Africa. I dropped it at Kitcheners in Joburg and everyone loved it.

  • Pierre Johnson - Like Home Interlude [Feat. Jazzuelle]

One of my favourite new artists at the moment and one of my favourite collaborations too. It’s not often that I write new music or collaborations and it becomes an interlude to a whole debut album. Pierre messaged me about this and sent me parts and I sent back some of mine and we did this. One of my favourite jams to start my sets at the moment.

  • Dwson - Luna

Definitely one of the breakout artists of last year, play this one anywhere and everyone goes nuts in South Africa. He also released his new album with House Afrika and Stay True Sounds recently, one of my favourite artists as well. I dropped Luna everywhere last year and early this year and it’s been a cracker of a tune.
