8 Tracks I Really Love – Rival Consoles

Music

Rival Consoles is the alter-ego of London-based electronic producer Ryan Lee West as he seeks to evoke all manner of emotions with a signature sound that is fit for home listening and larger spaces alike. His new album Howl is filled with all kind of aural treats that are sure to get your ears tingling. To celebrate the album's release, we asked Ryan to tell us about some of the sounds he loves the most.

Howl is out now via Erased Tapes.

Mogwai - Summer

This was the first Mogwai song I heard, when I was at college, Quiet-Loud-Quiet very inspiring to hear such a simple but powerful approach to music!

  • Colin Stetson And Sarah Neufeld - "The Rest Of Us" (Official Music Video)

A great sense of urgency in both the music and the video. This was a big influence on aspects of the rhythm in my album ‘Howl’.

  • Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong

Love the opening synth and the breakdown, the synths sound like they are singing a story and are all soft focus, detuned and degraded: something which I continue to be drawn to.

  • Autechre - Dropp

Classic fan made video which works incredibly well with this amazing Autechre song.

  • Ddwiwdd (Dan Deacon "When I Was Done Dying") | Off The Air | Adult Swim

Very euphoric song which is reinforced with an evolving madness in the video.

  • Battles - The Yabba

Love the understated trip quality to this video!

  • Anna Meredith - "Nautilus" (Official Video)

Great overlapping simple, bold layering of somewhat cheap brass samples in an inventive and inspiring way!

  • The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar

Still an absolute favourite after all these years, such a simple but mesmerising concept, really enriches the music, which is a big influence on my music.
