Two artists from our very own “Music To Watch Seeds Grow By” label will perform on September 14th at Plants Can Dance, an event series where plants generate music through bio-sonification.

The Seeds label as it’s become affectionately abbreviated to, continues its relationship with the most excellent Auntie Flo that began at their Bush of Ghost’s curated ambient area at Watching Trees festival this year.

“Much like nature, music is an ever-evolving process. With this project our aim was to achieve an unpredictable organic flow that still feels harmonious.”

The event series is created by sound artist and all round amazing explorer of this wonderful life; Brian d’Souza (Auntie Flo) and Lamine Toure from Repot Plant Shop. A three-part structure at Hideout venue in Hackney Wick, it begins at 3pm with workshops and talks, moves into “Deep Listening” performances where Stella Z and Lapalace will perform alongside Brian and Lamine’s modular synthesiser setup, powered by live biodata from plants in the venue. The day concludes with a “Plant Dance” where attendees can move and connect with the space surrounded by plants from Repot.

Stella Z will be performing an interpretation of her Fig release on Music To Watch Seeds Grow By. Also on hand will be Kirsty Talbot, a writer, poet, and lifelong book obsessive who will be reading her fig poem while Stella plays live.  Kirsty has spent her career in the book industry and is currently the buyer for the British Library, where she also runs the indie bookshop and is working on her debut novel.

Like at Watching Trees this year, Tanya Nonthando Wilson will be documenting the evening via drawings. Tanya has been part of Watching Trees from the beginning in many different forms and is a London-based multidisciplinary artist and educator working across tapestry weaving, drawing, and socially engaged practices and currently undertaking The Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School, Her drawing serves as a “visual diary, a tool for reflection, observation, and self-discovery, offering viewers intimate glimpses into both the world around her and her inner life.”

Also performing live will be Manchester-based producer Lily Mumby, the creative force behind Lapalace who chose Lavender as her botanical muse for the sixth instalment of Music To Watch Seeds Grow By. “Like the aromatic herb that grows from tiny seeds to fragrant purple stalks, her compositions unfold with a similar patience and elegance. Her synthesisers breathe with a natural rhythm, creating textures that emerge and recede like morning dew on lavender buds waiting to bloom.”

This meeting brings together two projects exploring the relationship between music and nature – one pairing ambient soundscapes with actual seeds, the other turning living plants into sound sources. The collaboration reflects a growing interest in how electronic music can reconnect us with natural processes and rhythms.

“Join us if you are into the environment, nature, modular synthesis, plant and fungi intelligence, ambient music, deep listening and generally exploring the natural world in new and adventurous ways 💚”

Plants Can Dance (and Mushrooms Sing)’ featuring Stella Z and Lapalace alongside residents Brian D’Souza and Lamine takes place on  September 14th at Hideout Hackney Wick.
