At Home With… Physical Therapy

Art & Culture

In this feature we ask an artist to bring us “Through The Keyhole” of their personal living space and let us know what it’s like at ‘Chez Artist’…

This month marked the release of a new album, a compilation of sorts, from Physical Therapy – a singular producer who has a broad remit in terms of style, persona and musicality. This much is clear from the very nature of the release which was a sprawling array of creativity spanning a huge number of musical styles, abstract soundscapes and influences. It reminded us of old tapes yet carried with it the forward thinking nature of sound design which has helped push the record label, Allergy Season, into prominent territory.

Daniel Fisher boasts a huge array of aliases and personalities, each represents an element of musicality and this is why his style is so unique and has been for years. From Buckaroo! to Car Culture, DJ Overnite to Green Buddha, Jungle Jerry to Kirk the Flirt & Peter Pressure – this is a man with big ideas.

Anyway, it's about time we found out a little bit more about the individual, here's a look inside the place he calls home…

Tell us about your eating/cooking habits? What is a favorite recipe?

So I am very much addicted to fad diets. I just think its fun to have a limiting factor that makes you think about what you cook and put into your body. Last year I did Whole 30 and Keto. Right now I’m doing one that is semi-based on something I read in US Weekly (I think Kate Hudson does it?) but mostly I just made it up. It’s called 80/20 and basically Monday through friday you don’t eat refined carbohydrates or processed sugars (meaning nothing made with any kind of flour) and on the weekend you eat whatever you want. I can tell you the recipe for what I made last night, which came about from skim reading a couple of recipes and then combining them and adding my own twist.

What’s your favourite room in your home and why?

My living room which has my record player and stereo system which were my moms old set up from college. The whole system is a bit janky but I’m just happy to have a place to listen to non-dance music records and not stare at the computer.

How would you describe the decor in your home?

I live with my girlfriend, Julia, and she has a much better sense of decor than I do (than most people tbh). I don’t think I so much as hung a piece of art on the walls anywhere I lived in the decade preceding us living together.

Are you handy at DIY or do you get someone in?

I wouldn't say I’m handy but I’m not exactly useless with a drill either. My old job was professionally installing chandeliers, which took a certain amount of handiness. Really I’m just not super motivated about doing DIY home improvement. I like to let a problem fester for a few months/years before it became unbearable and then deal with it. Julia is way more likely to take on a DIY project.

What do you eat for breakfast?

For a long time I was into cooking a big breakfast, eggs, bacon, the whole 9 yards, but lately I’m more into skipping breakfast. So just like Juul puffs and tea. I do have a tea addiction, and have pretty high standards about tea. I drink 2-3 pots a day. I just accidentally spent $120 ordering wholesale oolong from China.

Who is your neighbour? What do they do?

I’m pretty lucky to live in a building with lots of musicians, so nobody cares if i'm blasting music during the day. My neighbor across the hall is actually a famous blues musician Jerome “Blind Boy” Paxton. His commitment is super inspiring, he will practice the same piece of music for months till he has it perfect. Which can also start to drive a neighbor a lil’ crazy. But I’m sure he feels the same way about me listening to the same pounding 4×4 beat for 8 hours.

Do you eat your dinner at the table or on your lap?

On the couch in front of the TV like a normal person.

Bath or shower?

Bath 1000%. I was not a bath person till last year and now I can never go back. My apartment has a tiny bathtub which only fits about 1/2 of my body at any time but I still make it work.

What would you change about your home?

The extreeeeemely creaky floors.

And….. for those of you looking for Daniel's super secret sneaky recipe…

Herbed Pork Tenderloin w/ Apples:

In a mortar & pestle combine these ingredients in this order, making sure to effectively work them as they go in:

Whole Peppercorns
Fresh Rosemary
Fresh Thyme
Dried Tarragon
Maldon Salt Flakes
Olive Oil
Whole Garlic Cloves
Apple Cider Vinegar
Dijon Mustard

The consistency should be a very thick paste and there should be more than enough to cover a large pork tenderloin, with some left over. Take 2/3rds of the paste and cover the entire piece of pork and let marinate for a few hours.

Take the reserved portion of the paste and add more oil and cider vinegar until the consistency is like a salad dressing. Chop up two apples and half an onion into large wedges, add a few cloves of whole garlic and toss the mixture with the dressing.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Heat a large pan with a little olive oil to medium high heat. Sear the tenderloin for about three minutes each top and bottom. Use a pair of tongs to hold in on the other sides for 30 seconds each so its seared on all sides.

Put the apples and onions in a large casserole dish, and put the tenderloin in the center resting on the mixture. Sprinkle one more time with salt and pepper. Let cook for about 20 minutes until the center of the pork reaches a safe temperature of 145°F. I highly recommend using a meat thermometer because overcooked pork is very dry and tough and undercooked pork is little bit dangerous! Take out the pork let it rest for 10 minutes. Sprinkle the apples onions with a little bit more apple cider vinegar and let cook till the pork is done resting. Then slice the pork and serve with the apple mixture!
