He slithered through the throng. Blinkered to all, with all blind to him, he snaked towards the coffee shop window. He found isolation en masse. And solace. But, looking up for the first time since leaving the house, an image arrested him. “Tu le connais, lecteur, ce monstre délicat, Hypocrite lecteur, mon semblable, mon frère!”

If summer had gone ahead unruined, Maureen’s Tu Me Tues would have been one of its low-key anthems. It’s an easy-on-the-ear cut of Balearic boogie that one can easily imagine floating along a Mediterranean shoreline or ringing across a baked British campsite. Its title translates to “You’re Killing Me”: an appositely grim summation of a holiday season that had its throat cut by a viral assassin. Be that as it may, we can still sip on summer’s September dregs to the tune of this forgotten French groove. It was produced by Michel Bassignani in 1988 and unearthed by the Pardonnez-nous label, who dominated last summer with their reissue of La Compagnie Créole and Larry Levan’s joyous A.I.É.
