Yu Su picks records by musicians she dreams she might have the opportunity to work with one day.  A rare insight into the psyche behind a very talented musician in her own right.

This year saw the release of a new album from Yu Su, a musician who has never been one to stand still or remain in one place.

Her latest record was perhaps more out there, more weird, in parts heavier than previous – yet still carried the same intricate attention to detail, packed with interesting sound design and delicate programming throughout.

Yu Su is originally from China and is now based in London, she first emerged from Vancouver’s underground scene before earning international acclaim for her acclaimed debut album Yellow River Blue.

Known for her atmospheric productions and adventurous DJ sets, Yu Su creates music that explores memory, movement, and cultural connection through a deeply personal sonic lens.

It’s always interesting to see what a musician is looking to achieve through the means of collaboration. Over the years Yu Su has worked with a number of collaborators. However, there are ambitions very much yet to be filled on that front.

Below is a playlist crafted by Yu Su, profiling the artists that she’d like to work with somehow, someday, if the worlds aligned. This acts as a rare insight into her approach and nuance when it comes to music.

STL aka Stephan Laubner

‘From A Distance’ is my introduction to dub techno, every time I put it on all my senses get activated. I’d like to know how this magic works.

  • Youth (Martin Glover)

His project under the name The Fireman with Paul McCartney is a mad one, I’d like to sit in the studio with him making literally anything, preferably slow trance like this. And have exotic hangings and a smoke machine on at all times.

  • Mariah

Mariah, of course. I’d love to be in the band even just to play some shakers or a cowbell, though they don’t have much cowbelling going on…’Shinzo No Tobira’ of course inspired my first album ‘Yellow River Blue’ as you can hear loud and clear.

  • Superpitcher

One harp for the studio please!

  • Cosey Fanni Tutti

She seems like someone who’s extremely intuitive when it comes to music making, and I consider myself someone doing things on the fly as well. So perhaps a match made in heaven or a complete chaos.

  • Thomas Brinkmann

I’m obsessed with Thomas Brinkmann’s extraordinary ability to make things that cannot be put in one category at all, and he never fully gives you what you want or expect, the tension is so strong. I’d do anything to sit for a while in the studio and learn how he flirts with these sounds.

  • Wolfgang Voigt

I don’t think I’ve ever made truly ‘ambient’ ambient music, perhaps I lack patience. This would be a nice chance to sit patiently with Wolfgang and let the pads do their thing.

  • Erik Satie

Last one goes to Erik Satie, no need for explanation I think.
