Track By Track: Daniel[i] – Escapist
Guiding us through his new record, a retreat from the loud.
Belgian producer, live artist and DJ Daniel Danieli, better known as Daniel[i], creates immersive electronic music that exists at the intersection of ambient and techno. Based in Aachen, Germany, his work is characterised by introspective sonic landscapes built from intricate textures, filtered rhythms and field recordings, seamlessly blending organic and synthetic elements into fluid, evolving compositions.
A self-taught musician with roots in drumming, Daniel[i] began producing electronic music in 2006, initially exploring breakbeats and glitch before gravitating towards the meditative pulse of 4/4 rhythms and dub-influenced sound design. This continual process of exploration has shaped a distinctive artistic voice that prioritises depth, atmosphere and emotional resonance.
As the founder of Whispering Signals and a resident at NoName and Brandwerk, Daniel[i] has released music on respected labels including Mojuba, Alpenglühen, Muzan Editions and Semantica, while his own imprint reflects his fascination with the hidden “whispers” of sound through both deep rhythmic works and meditative ambient releases.
His new record is called ‘Escapist’ and he talks us through the rationale behind the release below:
“I chose the name Escapist because this album is entirely about the spaces we retreat to when the real world becomes too loud, too restrictive, or too heavy to carry. For a long time, I viewed “escapism” as something passive, almost like running away. But through writing these tracks, I realized that escaping can be a deeply brave and necessary act of self-preservation. It is about creating a sanctuary within your own mind.
The album is structured to mimic that entire emotional trajectory. It begins with Portal, which is the physical act of stepping out of reality and crossing the threshold. From there, the music dives into the hidden shadows of Occult and wrestles with the suffocating limitations of Borders.
The second half of the album shifts into what we escape to. It moves into the emotional sanctuary of Virtue, the soft, protective daydream of Reverie, and the bright, unburdened joy of Anew. By the time you reach Heavenly, the escape is complete. You’ve arrived at a place of total peace and emotional resolution.
Ultimately, Escapist isn’t about avoiding life; it’s about taking a necessary journey through your own internal landscape to heal, reset, and find the strength to return. It’s an open door for anyone who just needs to disappear for a little while.. “
Portal For me, this track acts as the threshold. When I was creating it, I wanted to capture that exact, breathless moment right before you step completely into the unknown. It feels like standing at the edge of a vast, quiet expanse, feeling a complex mixture of intense anticipation and a slight vertigo. It is less of an introduction and more of an invitation to leave the chaotic noise of the outside world behind, letting yourself slowly fall into the spaces I’ve built across the rest of the album.
Occult This is where the shadows live, but it’s never been about fear for me; it’s about a deep, irresistible curiosity. “Occult” came from a place of wanting to explore the hidden, unspoken corners of my own mind. I wanted to evoke the distinct feeling of walking alone through a dimly lit, ancient room where the air itself feels heavy with history and secrets. It’s mysterious and perhaps a little unnerving at first, but if you sit with it, it becomes deeply introspective. It is the emotional equivalent of looking into dark water and finally being comfortable with not seeing the bottom.
Borders I wrote “Borders” during a time when I felt incredibly restricted, both by my immediate surroundings and the walls of my own thoughts. This piece represents the friction between confinement and the desperate, quiet desire to break free. There is a recurring sense of pushing against an invisible barrier throughout the track, a heavy emotional ache that builds up but has nowhere to go. Ultimately, it’s about the exhaustion of fighting those boundaries, moving from a place of resistance into a quiet, bittersweet acceptance of where you could land.
Virtue After the heavy tension and confinement of the previous tracks, “Virtue” was born out of a need for emotional and moral clarity. I wanted this piece to feel like a warm, sudden ray of sunlight breaking through a thick, suffocating canopy of trees. It embodies a sense of unshielded honesty, purity, and a profound, bone-deep relief. For me, it captures the exact feeling of finally forgiving yourself for something you’ve carried around for far too long, allowing a clean, peaceful stillness to wash over everything.
Reverie This track is a daydream that you intentionally try to stretch out because you’re terrified of waking up. When I listen back to “Reverie,” I feel completely weightless, as if I’m drifting backward through old memories that have lost their sharp, painful edges over time. It’s nostalgic, deliberately hazy, and a bit blurred around the margins. I wanted to capture that beautiful, slightly melancholic space between being fully awake and falling asleep, where reality bends and everything feels soft.
Anew This track is pure, unfiltered hope. I wrote it to capture that incredible surge of energy you get when a heavy weight suddenly lifts off your shoulders and you realize your future is wide open. It’s full of light and a restless, beautiful excitement to see what’s around the corner. I wanted the melody to feel like a deep, refreshing breath—something that makes you smile without even realizing it. It moves with a bright, forward momentum, completely focused on the joy of fresh starts and the thrill of having a clean slate to play with.
Heavenly I knew from the beginning that I wanted to end this journey in a place of absolute, uninterrupted peace. “Heavenly” isn’t about a religious concept for me; it’s about reaching a state of total emotional resolution after a long period of searching. It feels like floating on your back in a vast, calm ocean under a clear night sky, where the water and the stars just blur together. It is pure surrender, stillness, and gratitude—a final, comforting embrace to close the album and leave you in the quiet.
