Space Is The Place with Fort Romeau

Music

What can you hear in space? What does it sound like when you dance between the stars? A hollow tone or a rampant drone?

For many years, music has channelled influences from the outer reaches within sound sculpture and design. Many musicians, producers and disc jockeys have attempted to replicate the serenity and futurism associated with space.

Each has approached the task in a different manner, no two people think or imagine in the same way and as such the music of the cosmos is as much open to interpretation as anything else. Some draw for the melodic flutter of synths and instrumentation, others approach the task with an industrial edge.

Fort Romeau is about to release a new EP for Live At Robert Johnson, we invited the eclectic producer to talk to us about some of the music which he associates with sounds from amidst the stars.

He picks music from Richie Hawtin, Eduard Artemiev, Eduard Artemiev and more…

From Within (Pete Namlook & Richie Hawtin) - A Million Miles To Earth

Excellent album from the late, great Pete Namlook in collaboration with Richie Hawtin from 2000 that recalls the late 70s experimental electronic music of Tangerine Dream and Jean Michelle Jarre. Those not familiar with Namlooks vast discography should check out his many great LPs and collaborations, of particular note are his LPs with Move D.

This particular youtube upload has a nice spacey video for extra cosmology points.

  • Eduard Artemiev - Solaris

While undoubtedly lesser known than Cliff Martinez’s (excellent) score to the (not so excellent) 2002 remake of Tarkovskys epic sci fi master piece “Solaris” Artemiev’s original score is a fantastic avant garde trip through early electronic experimentation and Musiq concrete.

  • Solid Space - Destination Moon

Very nice 80s weirdo synth pop new wave LP. I think I came across this one on a blog sometime in the past 10 years but it has been recently brought in from obscurity and given a nice vinyl pressing by the re-issue machine that is Dark Entries.

  • Ramin & Mehmet - Moon 44

How about some blazing acid trance from 1994? theres no shortage of space themed electronic music out there but trance and space ( both inner and outer) seem to be inexorably linked. Its interesting to hear this high tempo trance sound come back into vogue, I could never have imagined it happening only a few years ago!

  • Fort Romeau & Jas Shaw - Saturn Ascends

Shameless self promotion on this one but at least its thematically appropriate! A track that Jas (one half of simian mobile disco) and I made in his epic studio and released earlier this year on my label Cin Cin. The long breakdown made me think of streaming through spacetime on the long assent to the afterlife!
