Mark Broom – 8 Forgotten UK Techno Classics

Music

Mark Broom is a staple on the UK techno scene, an originator who bought his first decks in 1989 and has never looked back. Whilst other artists have besmirched their back catalogue with commercial tosh, Broom has kept it real, representing the full spectrum of techno over some 130+ singles. Presented with a man who so palpably knows his stuff, we wanted to get him digging deep – so we took the opportunity to ask Mark to pull us 8 forgotten UK techno bangers – he’s come through with a series of serious underground killers, time to get some knowledge..!

See Mark Broom along with Skream, Robert Hood and Evan Baggs at XOYO on Saturday 17th January, click here for tickets.

Tura - Reishi (2000)

Created by one half of Plaid, a great example of early UK techno, likemind released some great stuff in the 90’s from artist like Stasis, B12 & Nuron.

  • Neuropolitique - Mind You Don't Trip

Sad news regarding the loss of Matt Cogger, this classic lives on in his memory. Essential stuff.

  • Kruton: Smallfish Pa Track 2 (Autechre Remix)

This came out on a label I was involved with and what a cracking remix from AE, darkside funk!

  • Stasis - Vanmannans Answer - Time Is Right 005

Seriously underrated UK techno don Steve Pickton, I met him for the first time while we were postal messengers in London & we remained close friends for many years. Analogue WASP action alert.

  • Adrenalin M.O.D - Track This

This EP was superb, all the tracks are classics & this edit by Derrick May worked a treat!

  • Emiliana Torrini - Dead Things (Grain Remix)

Classic 7″ action from Fat Cat, always loved this Grain remix, a very simple but effective looped up, EQ’ed monster.

  • Hi Ryze - After The Flood (Alt Take)

(Mark’s pick: ‘Hi Ryze – Cyberia’ unfortunately isn’t available on YouTube) Cyberia is one of my favourites from Hi Ryze, moody synths with squelchy B-lines. Proper UK action.

  • Paul Rutherford - Get Real (Happy House Mix)

Not forgotten but this is definitely in my top 5 of all time, so many memories of playing & raving to this beauty.
