J.phlip – Influences

Music

Since signing to Claude VonStroke's label 'Dirty Bird', J.Phlip has had a meteoric rise and now finds herself as one of the hottest names on the beat-making scene. She recently took the time to let us know which tracks rate highly on her 'goosebumps ometer'.

Matthew Herbert - The Audience

This is probably my most played record. It will never die. I love the back n forth vocals between Dani Siciliano and Shingai Shoniwa (from the Noisettes). The piano chords that come in at 3 minutes are a heart melter. They get me every time. Herbert is a legend. He is a one of a kind. He has a strict code for how he composes his music . He has written, conducted, and played everything from house music to classical to big band and more. And hes weird. Love Herbert.

  • The Other People Place - Let Me Be Me

Ok so I have been absolutely obsessed with The Other People Place since discovering it. I feel a bit ashamed that this came out on Warp in 2001, but its better to be late in the game than never I guess. This was produced by James Stinson, one half of Drexciya, and a major contributor to Detroit electro and techno. If he hadnt passed away a year after writing this album he would be at the top of my list of people I would like to meet. This entire album has been the epitome of my analogue obseession. The tracks are simple and so beautiful. Machines talking with a touch of human element. I chose this track because it is the most dancey tune on the album, but I highly recommend listening to the whole thing from beginning to end, and anything else you can find by The Other People Place.

  • Outkast - Elevators

My favoite hip hop album of all time , Outkast – ATLiens (their 2nd album), came out in my favorite year for hip hop, 1996. I remember skipping school one day and driving to every music store in town on the hunt for this album. I had to have it that day like a starving person needs food. Outerspace hip-hop gospel funk whatever you want to call it. The live bass guitar on every track is what always gets me – its so damn smooth and groovy. Makes the songs glide like buttah.

  • James Blake - Sparing The Horses

My life was forever changed when I got James Blake – The Bells Sketch EP in a random ass promo pool in February 2010. I felt like I won the lottery that day. No single musician has given me that same feeling again since discovering James. What the funk is this shit?????? Him and his band are fuckin great at performing it live too – a massive wall of sub-bass noise dub funk slams your body so hard you cant hardly move.

  • Everything But The Girl Vs Soul Vision - Tracey In My Room

Feel good vocal house music baby. In high school I won a Ben Watt Lazy Dog mix CD from the only electronic radio show we had in Champaign, Illinois. Caller #7! Hahaha.. The host said I hope you like house music! I didnt even know what house music was – I was into electronic music but I had no clue about genre. Little did I know It was actually the love of my life. EBTG and Ben Watt were a huge part of my beginnings in house music, and funny enough they eventually led me to Justin Martin.. and then dirtybird..

  • Justin Martin - The Sad Piano

The Sad Piano – Justin Martins first record! Justin has defined his own genre of dance music that is so insane you actually cant put a name to it. The basis is melodic meets tough, but he also has the ability to melt genres together in a way nobody else can. His records will always make you dance, groove, freak your body, and sometimes laugh. And you will never mistake a Justin Martin record for somebody else. Add too it his badass DJ skills, the biggest heart ever, and a love for life and fun – I dont know how anyone cant be influenced by Justin Martin in some way or another. As some of you might know, Claude VonStroke and dirtybird as a whole has been a huge influence on me, even though I am a part of it. I didn’t have room to put a Claude track, but he is another person who created a whole new sound of house/techno – and that’s the kind of stuff that makes the world go ’round.

  • Audion - The Pong

Crazy noisy insane techno. Audion is the fuckin man. He is also partly responsible for me meeting the dirtybirds, because we all bonded during his set at WMC2005 at this tiny club called Jazid. Hes finally coming back with the Audion project after a 4 year break and I cant be more excited! UHHHH!!!!

  • Atmosphere - Gods Bathroom Floor

When I was 19 I went to 9 Atmosphere shows. I swear I wasnt in love with Slug! hahaha Those were the days of the Overcast and Lucy Ford albums. This was the first vinyl I ever bought. I love this song so much. Those hip hop days were some of the best times of my life. RhymeSayers baby – Midwest hip hop represent! ps Slug will you marry me? J/K!
