Influences: Slam

Music

Soma and Slam have been two of the most influential institutions in Glaswegian club music for twenty odd years now. Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have done more for the evolution of techno in the city than most, few can contest the level of commitment and perserverance they have shown throughout the decades. Slam remain a formidable duo at the forefront of techno music but as shown in their mix for The Ransom Note earlier this year the pair's influences stem from far and wide. The tail end of October will see the pair release a new album titled "Machine Cut Noise", it seemed fitting as ever to refresh ourselves on the duo's extensive musical knowledge. Here are their influences…

Aphex Twin - Tha

One of our favourite Aphex Twin tracks from way back from Selected Ambient Works.
This track really stands the test of time, and has really nice melodies and tones that grow with layered textures and melodies throughout.

  • Oubys - Resurrection

We love almost everything that Oubys do. This track in particular has stayed in our warm up sets for quite some time. Making use of drones melodies and field recordings. They seem to have a great knack for making interesting multi layered ambient music.

  • Throbbing Gristle - Still Walking

This is very self indulgent electronic music from as far back as 1979.This track lifted from the ironically titled 20 Jazz Funk Greats LP is always a great point of reference when we want inspiration for strange electronic percussion. Wonderfully esoteric and way ahead of its time.

  • King Tubby - Badness Dub

Dub has always been a massive influence on everything we do. We could have chosen from hundreds of Tubby tracks although the space echo effects in particular are amazing in this track. I hear a lot of similarities between Dub and modern techno at the moment.

  • The Human League - Morale

This is more of an interlude on their first album Reproduction and give an insight into what the Human league may have become if there were no commercial restraints placed on them. Lovely analogue sequences meet despotic dark tones.

  • Phuture - Acid Tracks

This is the record that kind of changed our lives. Grabbing a copy of this on the Trax label with its recompressed vinyl from the record shop for the fist time seemed to us both rudimentary and revolutionary at the same time! So sad to hear that Dj Spanky recently passed away!

  • Dj Esp - Medicine Show (Original Mix)

This was one of ESP’s deeper cuts and we found it again from a day of create digging trying to find lost gems. Not sure when this was released but its one of those ones we bought because we liked it at the time, but such was the state of play at the time we probably couldn’t fit it into our sets then, but now it sounds so on point!

  • The Memory Foundation - Breakpoint (Usm)

I’m pretty sure these guys were from Vienna and part of that great label Central records. We love this because its a kind of a unique take on electro which kind of has its own vibe – not Detroit but definently inspired by that sound. Kind of European take on Detroit which was in itself inspired by Europe in the first place! They’re playing ping pong across the pond with influences on this one!

  • Kaay Alexi Shelby - My Medusa

This track is always been coming in and out of consciousness .Its rough and ready and somehow a real raw classic released on the Transmat label originally.

  • Jeff Mills - Gamma Player

Still sounds emotive and amazing today as a lot Mills must still does. Detroit style strings meet alien bleeps and Rio percussion to create a a real hybrid of different styles that somehow work so well together!
