8 Tracks: Of Nitsa with Velmondo

Music

In the heart of Barcelona there is a club which has helped to champion and pioneer an array of producers whom have since evolved towards global recognition. The acclaimed venue has always been the talk of the town hosting residencies and distinguished parties which have become widely respected and highly regarded.

Velmondo is a producer based in the Catalan heartland, as a collaborator with John Talabot he has released music on the likes of Hivern Discs and Internasjonal. Now he has featured on the recently launched in house label of the longstanding Barcelona institution.

Nitsa Traxx will act as an outlet for residents and musicians closely associated with the club, Velmondo released a single via the imprint titled “Infinity” which was also kindly paired with a remix by Marvin & Guy.

We asked Velmondo to guide us through the music which makes Nitsa the special place that it is. He does so in eight tracks…

Cpi – Proceso

If there’s a DJ that represents Nitsa, besides DJ Fra, that would be Marc Piñol who’s been a resident at Nitsa since the early days. Fra often claims Marc’s his favourite DJ worldwide and I totally understand why he asserts so. Tasteful selection always and outstanding technique on the decks. As a producer I believe his joint venture with Hugo Capablanca as C.P.I. is more than remarkable. This track exemplifies well their sound: tons of acid, hypnotic beats and Hugo’s groaning with Space Echo a la Suicide. Pure elegance.

  • Etienne Jaumet – Entropy

In 2009 I saw Zombie Zombie performing live at Nitsa and I was totally astonished to see a drum kit on stage in a techno club. Since then I became a follower of Jaumet’s work and his way to homage krautrock, John Carpenter’s soundtracks and French prog through analog synthesizers.

  • Theo Parrish - Sawala Sayale

Theo Parrish is just one of the many giants I had the chance to witness at Nitsa. I remember it blew my mind to see his frenetic use of the rotary mixer and how he made a sweaty crowd go absolutely bananas during the whole set.

  • Al “Man” Muntzie And The Embraceables - We Are Steady Rockin'

Nitsa has room for disco as well. James Murphy played this tune in 2012 when he visited the club with Pat Mahoney, which was way before I joined as a resident DJ but I was dancing like crazy on the dancefloor. DJ Harvey usually plays an edit of this tune too.

  • Soichi Terada - Do It Again

A couple years ago I warmed up Nitsa for the veteran Japanese DJ and unexpectedly he joined me on stage with his Kaoscillator KO-1 when I was playing “Weh-In” by The Lord of The Isles and with a big smile on his face he started improvising along. “Do it Again” is just classic house at its finest.

  • Donato Dozzy - Vetta

I love everything Donatto does, from the minimal stuff like Destination Eskimo EP to the more drone and ambient oriented works like The Loud Silence. All of them are masterpieces. Released on Tresor Records, Vetta is a mind-bending techno track full of tribal toms and a labyrinthine 303 drowned in reverb. His set at Nitsa closing Mutek festival last year was memorable and a proof of his huge talent.

  • Parple - Ritual

Besides a good friend, John Talabot is in my opinion one of the most talented DJ’s and producers of this generation. In Barcelona everyone in the scene waits with expectation his yearly appointment at Nitsa for Christmas which always end up being successful sold out nights. With his alias Parple he delivered this trance-inducing track in 2016. Top-notch.

  • Velmondo - Infinity

I wouldn’t dare to say this is an iconic Nitsa track but it’s definitely the perfect occasion to introduce my latest release on Nitsa Traxx. During the recording process I mainly used a TB-303, a MFB-522 drum machine, a Roland SH-101 I borrowed, some acoustic percussion and a Yamaha DD-10 that I had circuit bended. The vocal samples are from an Alan Watts’ interview and also from an Algerian field recording of an old record I got at Discos Paradiso (mandatory visit when record-shopping in Barcelona). I look forward to the day I can spin it at Nitsa or play it live, hopefully this summer!
