8 Tracks: Of Frazzled Cosmic Inner Journeys With Heartless

Music

Heartless is a guarded producer, not one to let the cat out of the bag he has slowly but steadily established his sound at his own pace. Having previously released music on IDM label Particle Records he is now set to showcase music on Steve Bicknells 6Dimensions label on the 15th of September. The EP is an assortment of rough and rugged glitches layered weightily upon driven techno and dusty percussion.

A producer with a penchant for techno he has ground his teeth having consistently played records in Cardiff before the likes of Surgeon, Ben Klock, Levon Vincent and DVS1.

We invited him to select a part of our pieces of eight series.

Alice Coltrane - Om Shanti

To me, Alice embodies the epitome of cosmic music. I first discovered her with the Satchidananda album at an after party some years ago, and can remember it like it was yesterday. This is something I’ve discovered more recently – it really strikes a chord with its spiritual tone.

  • Alice Coltrane - Om Shanti

To me, Alice embodies the epitome of cosmic music. I first discovered her with the Satchidananda album at an after party some years ago, and can remember it like it was yesterday. This is something I’ve discovered more recently – it really strikes a chord with its spiritual tone.

  • Daniel Schmidt And The Berkeley Gamelan - And The Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn

Another recent discovery. I love the mix of electronic with Gamelan on this, and the way it weaves together the otherworldly tones of both. There was a time when I only knew and listened to techno, ambient music or whatever but these days I generally get a greater buzz finding gems from other genres where I hear parallel techniques and philosophies.

  • Pete Namlook & Mixmaster Morris - Fishology

My brother lived in Frankfurt when this came out in ’93 and he brought back a lot of Namlook and also things like Recycle Or Die. Inversely, he sent me out to get British releases from UK record shops as they were cheaper than in Germany. What I owe from both of these experiences is immeasurable. Rest in peace Pete. x

  • Ø (Mika Vainio) - Otava

Another sadly missed and massive influence, this track finds Mika in full blown cosmic explorer mode, conjuring up images and taking you away. Widescreen perfection.

  • Anthony Child - Amoré [Editions Mego]

Tony is a truly rare gent and someone who’s always taken the time to humour me. That being said, he’s also a true master of all his trades. I could lose myself in the beautiful improvisations of his Maui albums forever. A modern classic.

  • Bee Mask - Scanops

Both sides of this EP blew me away when they came out, so organic and alien at the same time. This one somehow conjures up the Art of Noise to me, but takes it into new and infinite possibilities.

  • Tcf - Db 9f 72 A8 B4 1c 62 8a 3c 96 22 8b 5b 03 23 6f 81 16 64 76 3e 0a D8 16

Again, this guy blows me away. A multiverse of complexity and beauty. Words fail me.

  • Radiohead - Pyramid Song

This song holds huge personal significance and the album represents a point where I feel Radiohead transcended genres, at the top of their game. Piano, orchestration and electronics – a ‘pop song’ about letting go and entering the void. Sign me up.
