8 Tracks Of Acid Education – Bakers Dozen

Acid Education – something we at R$N towers are very much in favour of; and who better to provide it than a man who spent his youth in the Hacienda, Back to Basics and Soak while growing up in Leeds. Bakers Dozen is an alias of Simon Baker and an outlet for his love of everything house (whilst his BKR Projekt monniker takes care of the techno). Previously we were treated to Piano Lessons from Bakers Dozen, and now there's more new music in the form of Reaching, a proper groovy footstomper that harks back to the music of Baker's formative years.

We caught up with the man behind Bakers Dozen to discuss the 8 essential tracks for a proper acid education…

  • Sterling Void And Paris Brightledge - It's All Right (House Mix)

    When I was digging out music to put into this article I played this and got an instant shiver up the spine. Brings back so many memories. Takes me back to my ravey days when I first discovered electronic music around 15. This was a classic at the Hacienda and Soak in Leeds. Can remember Sasha dropping it one NYE. Showing my age… and his 😉

  • Humanoid-Stakker Humanoid

    This tune was a game changer, way ahead of it’s time. Was proper white glove and whistler crew. This would take the roof off when that vocoder and acid kicked in. I’d heard this in The Orbit in Morley (Leeds), brings back fond memories of ceilings raining with sweat!

  • Phuture - Acid Tracks

    11 minutes 17 seconds of pure acid of the highest order. Love the stripped back minimal acid house simplicity, keeps you fully locked in throughout. Or it does me anyway, not sure it would my Dad! Word on the street is this was inspired by Donna Summer – I Feel Love.

  • Pierre's Fantasy Club - Dream Girl 1988

    Massive in the Hacienda back in the day this acid track. Can remember being all mashed up dancing to this. Tom Wainwright used to drop it all the time. Would easily fit into sets of today.

  • Lil Louis - French Kiss (Original Mix) 1989

    Another timeless track by Lil Louis. This was played EVERYWHERE back in the day. The synth layers are hypnotic as f*ck, I know it’s been played a zillion times but I never tire of this. I remember playing it in my bedroom on the decks and I would turn it down when the sex noise breakdown came in, in case my Mum thought I had a girl in my room! (I was young!) I later got bored of that sex noises on the record and I found a dub version which I play to this day.

  • Chip E - Time To Jack(1985)

    I know everyone goes on about “jacking” these days, but this was the original era. This always stood out for me due to some dogs barking half way in (on the remix I have anyway). No one samples dogs barking these days for some reason? I still drop this track, works well in the right setting. Today, I just found this Youtube of it with no dogs and wondering if someone was having a laugh with me!?

    I was a big fan of Junior Vasquez mixes back when I was a wee whipper-snapper. He would these play marathon sets along with Danny Tenaglia and a few others at the Sound Factory in New York. I used to dream of going there one day. Unfortunately it closed before I got chance. This was always on their mix tapes. It’s made purely for the club to get lost in. Pure mayhem!
