8 Tracks: Of A Brazilian Avalanche Of Bands With Marcelo Monteiro
"The independent Brazilian music scene is in an incredible prolific and revolutionary moment. Lots of new bands, great albums, massive production. It feels like every day there is a new album, EP, video or crowdfunding project. Rio and São Paulo always have dozens of great bands, lots of new talented musicians. But the good news is that production is now huge all around Brazil. Bands that could have disappeared in the filter of majors 10 years ago are now launchings albums, touring, posting and attracting new fans. The digital-streaming revolution has transformed indie in a kind of parallel mainstream with huge audience and his own stars. New labels such as Novíssima Música Brasileira are attempting to reconnect mainstream and indie, and helping to spread the new BR sounds to a wider audience. Bands that are still not seen commonly in TV and radio (although there are still some good programs in cable TV), but in web the new scene with independent and authorial music are doing great with packed festivals around Brazil. It’s a very special moment in Brazilian music, with a growth of EPs, vinyl and new festivals. Lots of money involved, and talents as well. Maybe this is the most gifted and numerous generation in Brazil since the 60s. A connected, digger, independent, eclectic, mixer machine generation."
Marcelo Monteiro, Rio journalist has selected some of the ‘must-listen’ bands today in Brazil, the BR 10s Generation. "It’s very clear there is no predominant style today in Brazil; there are music for all tastes, some even unexpected abroad from a Brazilian band—from all styles, psychedelic, afro, groovy, crooked samba, new MBP, instrumental, lots of rock in all styles. All brand new music."

Spiritual jazz groove also from São Paulo. Nômade Orquestra released their first album in 2015 betting in an instrumental afrosound alongside Brazilian traditional grooves soon compared to their countrymen Bixiga 70. The album has a beautiful English version in vinyl released by Far Out Recordings. An afrojazz bigband taking higher flights. In October they will tour Europe with gig already confirmed in Paris Duc des Lombards.
