8 Tracks: Music from ’90s Skate Videos with Famous Eno

Music

From one-offs like 'Gangsters' and 'Jaws Riddim' to his jaw-dropping remix of Akito's 'Metamessage', Irish producer Famous Eno has been behind some of the most indelible underground club anthems of the past few years. Released last week on Swing Ting, his debut EP Music for Clubs is home to six sizzling bangers and features vocals from the likes of Bryte and Killa P.

He's gone down something of a different route for his 8 Tracks selections though."'90s skate vids opened my ears to so much music as a kid", Eno explains. "Here's some of the songs that made a lasting impression. Beware – contains music not for clubs…"

John Coltrane - Traneing In

Taken from Mark Gonzales’ part in Blind’s ‘Video Days’. Would’ve been my first time hearing jazz like this, or maybe any jazz for that matter. I still listen to jazz every morning, and trap after lunch.

  • Gang Starr - Now You're Mine

Eric Koston’s part from 101’s ‘Falling Down’. Sick horns! The start of my journey into hip-hop I suppose…

  • The Brand New Heavies - Who Makes The Loot? (Feat. Grand Puba)

Skip to 17:43. Taken from Ron Knigge’s ‘Da Deal Is Dead’. Good shit, memories, live band too.

  • Sade - Smooth Operator

Chico Brenes’ part in the FTC vid. Damn, this track is the smoothest shit ever. Still one of my faves.

  • Raised By Seuss - Face The Music

Scott Johnson from 411VM #3. One of the first skate vids I ever got. This track made me feel like I was skating in downtown San Francisco when I was actually trying to skate in rural Ireland.

  • Nofx - Together On The Sand

Skip to 23:47. Another one from 411VM #3. The SMA industry section. To be honest I only found out this track was by NOFX while researching this piece. I used to play it on guitar to try and impress girls when I was 15.

  • Primus - Tommy The Cat

Taken from Pat Duffy’s part in Plan B’s ‘Questionable’ video. I used to have the lyrics to this one written on my bedroom wall.

  • Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Grey Cell Green

Love the emotion in this one. Still play it to people at 5am at house parties when we’re stuck for tracks. I’m probably the only one enjoying it though.
