Music

Now, for a name you may or may not be familiar with.

Olivier Alary is a Monteal based French producer whom has collaborated with the likes of Bjork and has released music on FatCat and Aphex Twin's Rephlex label. That caught your attention didn't it?

In the present he produces music which you might expect to soundtrack your favourite upcoming film, deep moody soundscapes are paired with a minimalistic take on classical and electronics. This month he will release a ne full length album which is titled "Fiction/ Non Fiction". Perhaps a cinematic reflection on the theatrical setting of much of his music?

We asked Olivier to guide us through 8 tracks which he kindly obliged us with below.

John Luther Adams: Dark Waves (2007)

John Luther Adams is an American composer known for his lush orchestral tapestries of sounds inspired by the landscapes of Alaska.
When you look at his scores, you can see that his approach is quite rigorous but the musical result is always direct and sensual.

  • "I'Ll Wait For You" By Sun Ra

Sun Ra is one of the most innovative jazz composers of all time. Throughout his career, he claimed that he was an alien from Saturn on a mission to preach peace through his music and art.
The discovery of his music was a revelation to me, the way he managed to make pop music, jazz and noise co-exist together was quite unique. “I’ll wait for you” is a good example.

  • Brigitte Fontaine - Il Se Passe Des Choses

Brigitte Fontaine is simply the most interesting French female avant-garde singer of all time.
Her lyrics are always acerbic and witty. Her performances are unique.
The piece here was arranged by Jean Claude Vannier who was responsible for the String arrangements of Serge Gainsbourg’s “Histoire de Melody Nelson”.

  • White Noise -Love Without Sound 1969

White Noise was a one album wonder English experimental band formed by David Vorhaus and BBC Radiophonic Workshop composers Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson. The song here is the perfect balance between psychedelia and electro-acoustic music.

  • Death Speaks David Lang

David Lang is an incredible post-minimal composer from New York.
His music is quite open-minded and takes many forms.
In this project here, he created a onetime band comprised of Bryce Dessner, Owen Pallett, Shara Worden and Nico Muhly. The aim was to blend indie rock, post-minimalism and Schubert’s lyricism.

  • Chico Buarque & Ennio Morricone - Per Un Pugno Di Samba (1970)

A one time collaboration between Chico Buarque & Morricone. A unique album blending both musical personalities that I post here in its entirety, because I find it so perfect.

  • Kraftwerk - Radioland

One of the most desolate and poignant Kraftwerk songs.

  • François Bayle - Solitioude

Francois Bayle is a french acousmatic composer that collaborated here with David allen (The Soft Machine, Gong) to create probably the most groovy electro-acoustic piece ever.
