postcards from LA #5

Music

Like a lame farmhouse mule I’ve been kicking myself back in gear this week after the Christmas break. It’s been a battle of wits in a man vs email showdown, one can only hope I’ll reign undisputed champion come the weekend. Anyway enough on that…

David Bowie – Love Is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA)

James ‘he’s gone and done it again’ Murphy delivers what is undoubtedly his best remix to date, for non-other than David Bowie. Lets face it if Bowie asked you to do a remix your gonna put in the yards aren’t you! Hitting wax for a limited run these won’t be around, cop yourself one via DFA pronto.

Todd Terje –  Spiral

His re-edits are the stuff of legend, but for me Todd Terje has really hit his stride with his original productions. ‘Ragysh‘ being a firm favourite in my dj sets, and we have all of course have lost it to ‘Inspector Norse‘. ‘Sprial’ is his latest solo outing, and boy does it deliver. I heard this on NYE and it’s instantly caught my attention. Gold standard stuff from one of Norway’s finest musical exports.

Dollkraut Theme of Fukoyama

With a sniff of Egyptian Lover and chunk of John Carpenter, this beauty from Dollkraut landed in my inbox the other week and it’s been growing on me ever since. Machine funk of the highest order.

Mix of the week

Jokers of the Scene White Light mix

If like me you love a vague sense of unease, then this mix is for you. Rubbing up the worlds of horror and those 80’s movies that you just can’t shift from you mind in a tightly nit fashion, Jokers of the Scene deliver the goods and then some.

Dollar Bin Sunday

Digging has been off the menu for the past couple of weeks, so it seem fitting to bring to light an oldie but a goodie in the shape of Le Dust Sucker – Mandate My Ass. One of my favourite disc jockeys Erol Alkan recently shared this online, and listening to it brought back some great memories of mid-week dancing at Nag Nag Nag

P.S.

If you happen to find yourself in Los Angeles this Saturday you’d do right to head on down to The Light where those fine gentlemen Psychemagik will be dj’ing. There is promise of one massive mirrorball’ as well, sounds like a fun night out to me.
