You might have noticed Nandele, the Mozambican live artist and producer around and about on these pages and in your ears courtesy of Human Endeavour under his own artist name – Maputo – and R$N Recs (as part of the great ILHA a long distance sound relationship between Messrs African Ghost Valley and Nandele).

A pivotal figure in Maputo’s electronic music scene, his music is a fusion of hypnotic analogue via grunge bands, boom bap crews, and hip hop collectives.

With previous releases on esteemed labels like Tresor, Cotch International, and Already Dead Tapes, Nandele’s nearly 25-year career has always been forward-thinking. Field recordings captured around Maputo with tense rhythms; at times they crawl and slither, at others they rumble and clatter. It’s a good summary of what’s store for your ears with this mix…

Who are you…

I am Nandele, a sound artist and electronic music producer,born and raised in Maputo -Mozambique

Where are you

What are you
I am human

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

My music sounds like machines and samples of everything. Just imagine R2D2 sounds mixed with African cadences and ambiences.

How does your brain work when making music? how does it work when you aren’t?

It works like a story and it depends on my mood on the day I am making music. My brain works pretty much when i am not doing music. But music makes me a better Human. It elevates my spirit when i am making it.

What was the first electronic record you heard and how did it make you feel?

My first electronic record I heard and I still hear till this day is the soundtrack of the the movie Blade Runner and that blew my mind.

Actually I bought yesterday a Vangelis album…

Where was the mix recorded?

It was Recorded in Rotterdam

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

The ideal setting to listen to the mix is with friends, if you like dancing to it? It’s even better…

What should we be wearing?

All Black

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format

In a studio, in a basement somewhere in Mozambique

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Jeff Mills, I would like to see his technique up close. His the best!

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

I have a recording studio so it;s equipment is there to produce music, I usually go to another studio and record my mixes. My current setup is more for live performance, and at the moment I use Two Drum Machines, Three Synths, and a Sampler.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track i start its how it will set the tone of the mix if it’s a recorded one.

What were the first and last records you bought?

My first record i bought was Prodigy – Music for the Jillted Generation my last record was Faith No More – Angel Dust

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

It would taste like Pizza
