Joe Lye – The ‘Monday Is Ok’ Drama Parlour Mix

Music

We here at R$N Towers don't take a cavalier approach to our visual appearance and we like to make sure that we're looking as suave as can be so that we can enjoy ourselves in style. Thankfully, the worlds of music and looking good are set to collide on Thursday 10th September as London's Drama Parlour put on their Summer Gymkhana at which your ears will be treated to sounds from Joe Lye from Amp&Deck and 'his (potentially famous) mate from Kent'. As we're so excited about Thursday night, we couldn't wait to hear what Joe Lye had to offer so we asked him to put us together this ace mix to make our Monday run smoothly.

Let Joe Lye take care of your ears, Drama Parlour will sort your hair and we'll provide you with the regular batch of inane questions;

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

My name is Joseph Phillip Norman Lye. I am one half of the cosmic DJ duo AMP+DECK alongside my co pilot Kevin Macey. I also DJ alone under the moniker Joe Lye. I am based in London, on the high street.

Describe your sound without using the letter 'e'.

nthusiastic.

What was the first electronic record you ever heard and how did it make you feel?

I remember this well. It was French Kiss by Lil Lious. I was in the back of my parents car. Intrigued by the lyrical content I quizzed them on what the person in the song was doing to which they replied "riding a bike uphill"…

Who was your first great inspiration? Who inspires you now?

Ravishing Rick Rude. My beautiful girlfriend.

What were your original aspirations as a producer and how do you think you're shaping up?

To make a record as good as Enya's Return to Innocence. I haven't started yet.

How does your brain work when making music? How does it work when you aren’t?

Where's the Haribo?

Who is your favourite Joe/Joseph from history and why?

That would have to be Joseph, because of his amazing technicoloured dream coat.

How does your land lie?

On its back.

What's the least comfortable thing you've ever slept on?

I can't recall being uncomfortable when asleep, I sleep heavily.

If you were trapped on a desert island with one other person, who would you choose? How long would it be before you ate them?

My beautiful girlfriend, about half an hour.

You just had a fight with the person you are closest to. Do you not speak to them until they apologise or do you apologise first?

Apologise first, I'm not good with uncomfortable silences.

What's your greatest vice?

Records and parties.

What are you obsessed with at the moment?

Minions.

What's your answer to everything?

Yeah, ok.

Are you on the same wavelength as the Boomtown Rats or do you actually like Mondays?

This all depends on how good the weekend was.

How many fingers are we holding up? (There are five of us here right now)

40 (Close, it was 41 – Ed.)

Onto the mix…

Where was the mix recorded?

At home in the record room.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

The mix was made for The Drama Parlour so this would surely be the best place to listen. Having your barnet chopped by either Victoria or Jeff.

What should we be wearing?

A black hairdressing gown.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Sat on the sofa watching Coronation Street/MacBook/Virtual DJ.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Stopp Seisku Aeg! by Velly Joonas.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Toss up between Moodymanns Live set from RBMA Skate London and Lexx's Sunshowers.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

The Milk Bar with Mr Phil Mison sounded pretty good.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

First was two Citronic belt driven record decks with a dialled pitch control and a Kam GM25.
Now is two Technics 1210's, one Pioneer CDJ1000 and a Urei Souncraft 1620LE.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The track you start with, always.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First – Six Minutes of Pleasure by LL Cool J (Second Hand)
Last – Hello Sailor 7" (which also features on the mix)

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Banoffee Pie.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A Seal.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I Love You S By La Perversita. On the merits that the intro should never be mixed just enjoyed.

Upcoming in the world of Joe Lye?

As this goes out I will be returning from playing at the wonderful Festival No.6 as Amp+Deck. The Drama Parlour party Mid September of course! Myself and Kevin will be returning to Ibiza for one last time this year to play at the debauched Halloween party at Boutique Hostal Salinas and also a Sunday session at Pikes Hotel.

Anything else we need to discuss?

I think we may have tied up all loose ends here, but if you ever need me to discuss anything please feel free to contact me via the medium of Pigeon.
