Ekman: The ‘Wednesday Alternative’ Mix

Music

Dutch producer Roel Dijcks moonlights as Ekman, an alias that serves his heady driving electro productions. His enviable discography has taken him to countless labels, including the likes of Berceuse Heroique, New York Haunted, The Trilogy Tapes, Cultivated Electronics and Bedouin, the latter two of which he'll be releasing on in the near future. His forthcoming double LP for Bedouin will also see him hitting the road for an album tour towards the end of this year…

He delivers something different for this week's Wednesday Alternative mix. Today's offering is made up of all his own recordings original that drift through ambient and experimental electronics…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you, what are you?

I'm Ekman, one of the alter ego's of Roel Dijcks, I curently live in the south of the Netherlands

Where was the mix recorded?

In my studio

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Dark room, comfy chair, eyes closed

What should we be wearing?

What ever you feel like, something comfortable I assume

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

With the vinyl collections of some of my friends on the system in the IFZ in Leipzig. Or just any place in Japan

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

They are all my own recordings so can't pick a favourite, they all play their part

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Mixed up in The Hague by I-F, it made such an impact on my life

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

To me the prospect of a back to back doesn't appeal at all, I know it's the thing now, but really not for me. I would prefer to do a collab instead

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

I started with my technics 1200 and my current set up is a sore point as I am between places and dont have a current set up

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

They both should do something different but work to the same point, can't have a beginning without an end and vice versa

What were the first and last records you bought?

First: Dead Kennedys – Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables

Last: The Dead Brothers – Wunderkammer*******

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Medicine

If it was an animal what would it be?

A virus

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

My own record Anomie, if you succeed everyone in the audience will still think you messed up

Upcoming in the world of Ekman…

New 2×12 Album on Bedouin records with collab 12" single on Creme Org and EPs on Cultivated Electronics and Shipwrec coming up

Anything else we need to discuss?

I will start my album tour in the last part of the year, hope to see you all on the road somewhere.
