Abstract experiments and futuristic club sounds from a mysterious producer and DJ emerging under the guise of Cleyra.

A few weeks back an email landed in our inbox signposting music from a mysterious artist operating under the guise of Cleyra. We were kindly tipped off by the team at Timedance who usually know a thing or two about cutting edge electronica but even by their standards this one was far out.

However, we say that in the very best way.

Cleyra is an artist who likes to keep themselves private. The music does the talking and offers a brief insight into their psyche but that’s about it.

This mix is a tour de force demonstrating the potential future of dance and electronic music, a hectic maze of sounds which challenge and entice at both the same time.

Listen and read the interview below:

Please introduce yourself…

hiya

Who are you, where are you and what are you?

I’m a producer, currently in Bristol -> London

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

like it could be a little better, don’t you think??

Where was the mix recorded?

drag and dropped in Ableton, it consists of my previous rekordbox library playlisting tracks from last year, some of my own work and a few people I’m fond of.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

w headphones

What should we be wearing?

something that makes u feel cute ofc

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

Baby I don’t dream about recording mixes

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Hmm, in a mix, maybe Wolfrum I almost always put it on when my eyes fall on it. But matbe EE for their romance, Tim DeWitt for his incredible productions or Jaijiu for the chaos.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

usually the last one I heard, I think it was this or this.

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I think go back-to-back with a stranger and see where that takes you. I wish I could have heard David Mancuso in The Loft or gone to Sally’s Hideaway / Sally II’s. But we have Strange brew and the Dirtytalk nights changed me. The Gilb’r b2b Jan Schulte one was memorable.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Housemates x2

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

neither people really shouldn’t overthink it. Just listen to what is important, or fun to you, and what you think needs to be heard in that context.

What were the first and last records you bought?

I think it was I’ve Been There by Ghost Warrior last year, who’s featured on this mix.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Revels

If it was an animal what would it be?

My animal spirit chart says I’m a Handfish.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Nothing is impossible to mix if you don’t care. But Ideal Acid by Evol, I heard skeemask mix it, it threw me out so I bought it, but I’ve never tried.

Upcoming in the world of…

Continue writing, maybe a collaboration, but I’m shy. The EP comes out May 23.

Anything else we need to discuss?

can I go now ? ?
