Circadian Rhythm – The ‘Shine A Light On’ Ransom Note Mix

Music

We're not going to suggest that having experience as a carpet worker in an auction house has been the shaping of Circadian Rhythm's talents but we're not going to rule it out either. He's got a rather distinctive style to his sounds and he must have picked it up somewhere, why not at the auction house? The Swedish music-maker has signed up to Mr Tophat's label Junk Yard Connections to release his Chateau EP. We liked it so much that we asked him to curate a mix for us and, once he'd supplied the aural goods, we shone our light down on him for a friendly interrogation;

Please introduce yourself…

Who are you, where are you and what are you:

My name is Jack. I recently left Stockholm for Copenhagen. I’m a renegade.

Describe your sound without using the letter 'e'.

Manga jazz.

What was the first electronic record you ever heard? How did it make you feel?

Not the first, but the one I remember is the the soundtrack of whipeout 2097. Made me feel like Snake Plissken driving a chromed Kawasaki Ninja.

If your sound was a visual thing, what would it look like?

Sitting on the bottom of the sea, looking up at fish, reef, seagulls and stuff.

What was the music of your teenage rebellion?

Wu-Tang, if I ever had one.

What's the best shape? Are you a fan of circles?

Circles and triangles are my favourites.

Have you got a favourite rhythm?

Working late at night, doing everything else in the morning.

Are you a kick drum, hi hat or a snare? And why?

Double stroke kick – I just can't get enough

Where is the strangest place you've woken up naked?

On a reef with a snake.

If you were a cat, what type would you be?

Liger or Tigard.

Which figure from throughout history would you most like to meet and what would you ask them if you had only one question?

I would ask Francis Bacon if he would like a beer on the corner.

What do you think the world will be like in 100 years?

What’s your greatest vice?

Probably City, I like neon and Blondie.

What piece of music makes you cry?

I basically don't cry.

When were you happiest?

I'm happy most of the time.

What’s your guiltiest pleasure?

Motor sport, I love motor sport.

Onto the mix…

Where was the mix recorded?

I just moved to Copenhagen and all my stuff is back in Sweden, so currently I don't have a computer. I made the mix in an airplane hangar on my iPad, D&D style timing with pen and paper since I couldn't listen on the cued track. But that's the Circadian spirit.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

A windy afternoon on the highways of Iceland in a Dodge Viper.

What should we be wearing?

Swim wear, we are going to the blue lagoon.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

International space station, NASA care for the equipment.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Max Mohr's 'Old Song' has been giving me shivers for years.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I have great memories from 2manyDJs "As Heard On Radio Soul Wax Pt 2".

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Jez Varley and Marc Bell, would be a fun night.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

Never had a real setup, always a player but never two. All DJing was done in bars.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Start track is more delicate, last track is just reeling.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Got a lot of good records from my parents while grooving up. The first I remember was Nevermind on casette from a gas station. Still one of my all time favourites. Bought three records from Mat Jarvis, Gas 0095, Sounds of Earth and The World Forgotten

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Green tea ice cream.

If it was an animal what would it be?

Frog or cockroach.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I tried to squeeze in a song by Ravel, had a hard time.

Upcoming in the world of Circadian Rhythms?

We will have some kind of release party for the EP here in Copenhagen, no details yet though.

Anything else we need to discuss?
