Black Forces: The ‘Shine A Light On’ Mix

Music

When you talk about music coming out of Atlanta, it’s likely the fertile rap scene would come to mind first. But if you dig a little deeper you’ll find a ton of skilled artists making moves in underground dance music.

Our introduction to this scene came via tape label Harsh Riddims who are indebted to showcasing up and coming producers from the city, and it was on one of their compilations that we first heard local producer Black Forces.

An integral and opinionated voice, Black Forces is the moniker of Evan Colbert, who also produces as part of a duo called Cyberia. His output is predominantly rooted in raw, deep house and has seen him recently self-release a two tracker called BR XXX before making his solo debut on Mike Simonetti’s 2MR.

We reckon we’ll be seeing much more from him in the future so to give you a taste of what he’s all about we got him on board for this week’s Shine A Light On mix…

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

BLACK FORCES.

Cyberia, sometimes Atlanta.

Very Opinionated.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

My music sounds like how I feel.

Where was the mix recorded?

My room.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In the car, driving at the highest legally advisable speed in your part of town.

What should we be wearing?

All black air force ones. maybe some cool accessories.

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

The concert from Queen of the Damned, but styled like a rave. CDJS. Biggest soundsystem possible.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

I like ‘Rainforest’ a lot. ‘Big News’ is the most recent and most special.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Justice – Across the Universe

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

DJ Mehdi, because outside of the Ed Banger crew being a huge personal inspiration to me, knowing that there was a person of color in their ranks making crazy shit definitely helped me with finding the confidence to pursue electronic music.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

A midi keyboard i rigged to traktor, now i have a Maschine rigged to Traktor.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

The first track sets the tone.

What were the first and last records you bought?

Stevie Wonder – Songs In the Key of Life & Electribe 101 –  Talking With Myself

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

A cold knife.

If it was an animal what would it be?

Jaguar.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

Nothing is impossible to mix.

Upcoming in the world of …

CYBERIA – Got some cool stuff coming from my planet soon.

BLACK FORCES – A lot of music.

also the next election is coming up (allegedly) that’s pretty important.

Anything else we need to discuss?

There are a lot of things we could discuss but that would require another discussion.
