Youre a true Amsterdam club local. Tell us about the club scene there, what is special about it and what sounds are really thriving at the moment?

Ive always appreciated the eclectic side of the Amsterdam sound and scene. My favorite clubs like Trouw, Toko MC, Studio 80 and Club Up also contribute a lot to that variety with the club-nights and program presented. Also Paradiso and Melkweg have a good selection of concerts and events. During the festival-season Amsterdam provides a number of quality festivals like Pitch, 5daysOff, Lente Kabinet, Costa del Soul and Lowlands. Even though Im playing abroad mostly nowadays Im excited  to play and perform there if my schedule allows it. Organisations, institutions and labels like Rush Hour, Dekmantel, Colors and Voyage Direct keep the ball rollin.

You started your first club nights back in the late 90s. How have you seen things change since then? Are you still as involved in the Amsterdam club circuit as you were back then?

Im not as involved as back then, but I get booked often enough. Im mainly focused on dj-sets, live-performances and promoting the album I released in June 2012 with Rush Hour records, entitled Animal(www.sanproper.com), but Ive been setting up a new label Propers Cult for my upcoming releases and Im hosting a club-night which goes by the same name, in the basement of Trouw at De Verdieping with guests like Daniel Wang, Axel Bowman and others.

What is your favourite kind of club night? Do you love the big crowds or getting down and dirty in a little unknown, underground venue?

Id have to say I prefer clubs with a capacity of 700 people max, to preserve that intimate feel on the dancefloor.

Youre playing at Rhythmatic next month on 2nd March, how did you get involved with those guys? You seem like quite a good match in terms of your ideas about music and the underground scene, would you say so?

Yes, I agree. I seem to end up with cats like that a lot. Not sure why, but you know what they say great minds think alike, although I hope for their sake that the Rhythmatic-crew isnt as oblivious as me

Can we expect more from you on the Perlon label?

Yes

How do you feel about the rise in bass music we are seeing in dance music? From the revival of garage, to dubstep etc, do you think it affects the underground scene in any way?

Its part of musical evolution and Im sure it has its effect and its important to feed new generations with plenty of revival, thats been happening throughout musical history. Its a necessity and me I enjoy the course of events as much as the next man, but and I quote the legendary track by Glenn Underground; House Music Will Never Die.

What music do you really connect with? Do you have different music for different moods?

Like I mentioned before, my heart belongs to music . Im in ulove with many different genres, most of em actually, but cant quite put my finger on which mood clicks with which style. Sometimes when I wake up Ill put on some slashing Techno while the next tune could be some Brazilian Bossa or some Roots Reggae Dub. Lately Ive been enchanted once again with the work of Holger Czukay. Ive been writing and recording some industrial slow-dance ballads, but then again the upcoming release on Propers Cult I did is pretty feisty. A genre Id call  Dusty House & Organic Techno.  Im also working on this project entitled De Afro Bode, a ghost-band presenting Afro-beat from Amsterdam. And then theres The Dirt Machine, a project Ive been working on with Tom Trago off the grid which sounds like a mixture of Disco, New Wave, Rock and Soul.

No rules for me, thank you.

Have your got much in the pipeline in the next coming months?

The last single of Animal will hit the stores soon; Auto Sea.

I just did a bunch of remixes since the fall of 2012 for Adil Hiani , Francesco Belfiore, Paso, Dimitri and others, but like I mentioned, my label Propers Cult is about to kick off and Im completing other tracks for Voyage Direct, House Republic, Perlon, Dekmantel and more for Rush Hour.

San Proper plays Rhythmatic on 2nd March at hoxton Basement. Tickets and info over here.
