Operating under a number of guises Jan Schulte has made some of the most exciting and interesting music of the past ten year…

As Jan Schulte he has compiled compilations and material for the likes of Safe Trip and Music for Dreams whilst as Wolf Müller he has appeared on Themes For Great Cities, International Feel and Growing Bin.

As Bufiman he has released on the likes of Dekmantel and Warning and now on the ever-excellent Comeme with the ace Switch Beats EP.

His output is wild and far-reaching, his passion for music unrivalled and it’s a pleasure to have him in his Bufiman guise deliver this week’s Ransom Note mix.

Listen and read the interview below:

Who are you, where are you and what are you

I am Jandalf the Bufiman from the Frog Steady Crew of Earth.

What does your music sound like? Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

Where was the mix recorded?

At my home studio, it’s called Wolf Müller Flanger Studio, in Düsseldorf.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

This is for every listener to decide on his own i guess – but maybe dont listen on phone speakers !

What should we be wearing?

Please be comfortable.

How does your brain work when making music? How does it work when you aren’t?

I eat food and somehow this is converted into energy for my synapses and then they are ready for the little electronic impulses the small hairs in our hearing system create to somehow get really intense emotions from vibrating air pulses.
It is really miraculous and wonderful that we perceive the vibrating air pulses aka sound like this and it makes me really happy that i can create music and sound and this sound even makes me and even others want to move to it rhythmically. Sound!

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

🙂 At my home studio, it’s called Wolf Müller Flanger Studio, in Düsseldorf… Or with the record collection of Tako Reyenga at Tomorrowland.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Many favs in the Mix! But an alltime fav ultra banger is Curt Cress’s Dschung Tek.

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

I-f ‎– Mixed Up In The Hague Vol. 1

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

I would really love to get an impression of DJ Kool Herc’s block parties went down.. as this use of drumbreaks and the following evolution of breakbeats and all that followed might be the biggest influence to my life music wise.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

In an online mixtape the last song might not have the same value like the first one… but the last song after a long and intense night of mixing and enjoying dance music with other dancers is very important! Some of these moments i will always be remembering with a huge smile.

What were the first and last records you bought?

First:
The first CD I bought was The Prodigy – Breathe (Single-CD) and the first vinyl record was Zeb. Roc Ski & Stieber Twins – B-Boys Revenge on MZEE Records.

Last:
The last record I bought .. wait, do digital downloads count here? However, the last piece of music I purchased was Olof Dreijer – Rosa Rugosa which is a magical tune.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Like finding 100€ on the street and no one else saw it.

If it was an animal what would it be?

A Gibbon – Just amazing to imagine a Gibbon dancing.

If you could travel in time…Where in time would you go? Why?

I have a soft spot for the 70s.. but living in the present makes it possible to listen to music from all past epochs – easier than ever before through the crazy depths of the Internet!

Your doctor says you need more exercise….What do you take up for exercise?

I am indeed in need of exercise and should go cycling more often. Sometimes I dream of a Breakdance Session for elders as a training – but also Breakdance works a lot easier when you are young.

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

I guess Francine McGee’s – Delirium is the hardest to mix disco record as the drums in the beginning are wildly shifting between at least 5 to 10 BPMs .. but maybe someone can master that one. A record that No one should mix tho is Nina Simone – Sinnerman.

Anything else we need to discuss?

How to end capitalizm and create a fair and contemporary social justice! Millionaires are not “cool” or attractive – Nobody in the world can accumulate so much money without someone somewhere in the world suffering because of it.
