If you direct your eyes to the frozen north in July, then you may very well be surprised to see evidence of the “rising sun”.

After appearing at Revive Her in Dalston Superstore, the Ene Records European 2012 tour is making its next stop at Dada in Newcastle, for a very special gig featuring label boss Chida and producer de jour The Backwoods (aka DJ Kent. Also one half of Force of Nature alongside KZA)

Dada have been running for almost 3 years at the time of writing. It’s a party ran and maintained by DJ Producers Last Waltz (Endless Flight, World Unknown, Futureboogie) that takes place outside of the traditional nightclub setting in bizarre and unique spaces that have included the likes of a rooftop in an industrial estate, a former bed showroom and a perfectly preserved 50’s Jazz Club (complete with coronation bunting and a pagoda). This next party is actually the final one to take place in their most recent home, The Old Music Hall, which has previously been the setting for Dada parties with DJs including Felix Dickinson, Chris Duckenfield, Marcus Marr and Nick the Record.

The entirely derelict Victorian Music Hall, a genuine piece of Geordie history which even featured in the regional anthem “The Blaydon Races” (a song that celebrated its 150th birthday 2 weeks ago) was unearthed and reclaimed by Last Waltz last year and they intend to give it the send off it deserves, before it undergoes the inevitable demolition and re development into part of a luxury hotel complex.

If you scratch the surface of Newcastle’s nightlife, it’s not rare to see appearances from the more left of centre names of house/disco/techno/whatever appearing at it’s more discerning underground parties (see Suono, Endless Race, Road to Rimini and of course, Dada), but it’s fair to say that even a UK appearance from either headlining DJ is unusual in its self, so the opportunity for the “northern Balearic bloc”, to catch them, not to mention people from Scottish musical hotspots such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, without travelling to the far South, is expected to make this a very popular event north of the Watford Gap.

Chida’s Ene records is currently one of the hottest labels in the world right now, with releases from the likes of Tiago, Lord of the Isles and The Backwoods himself. As well as this, Chida’s release “Danca” on ESP Institute was one the tracks of last year amongst the more enlightened selectors, even finding its way on to Andrew Weatherall’s recent “Masterpiece” mix. The Backwoods is also at the height of his creative powers, with music released and forthcoming on labels such as is “Is It Balearic?” and “Seeds & Ground”, and plays from DJ legends such as DJ Harvey who included the recent Backwoods remix of Vahagn on his official April Mix Cd. Both DJs artists however, are DJs above all else, and the 2012 Ene Records tour should prove to be unmissable.
