ROCKIN (THE ROCKABILLY SCENE)

AN EXHIBITION OF IMAGES BY ANDREW SHAYLOR

Monday 11 April Sunday 15 May 2011

Monday Saturday 9.30am 11.00pm, Sunday 12pm 6pm

For enthusiasts, rockabilly isnt just a kind of music, its a way of life. A raw fusion of rhythm and blues with country and western, rockabilly heralded the start of the teenage rebellion in America in the early 1950s. The stripped down sound witnessed a revival in the 1970s and has continued until today, with rockabillies embracing not only the music but the clothes, cars and lifestyle of 1950s youth counterculture.

Rockin is photographer Andrew Shaylors unique portrayal and subsequent book of the contemporary rockabilly scene. Shaylor captures the raw energy of the music and the commitment of the rockabilly community to authenticity.

In ROCKIN, photographer Andrew Shaylor takes a behind-the-scenes look at rockabilly today. Granted exclusive access to events on both sides of the Atlantic, Shaylors astonishingly atmospheric images evoke another era and reveal the rockabilly communitys remarkable commitment to authenticity and attention to detail. From the hairstyles, swing dresses and turned-up jeans that characterize the look, to voluptuous 1950s Cadillacs and Chevrolets and old valve guitar amps, Shaylor discovers a scene that has scarcely changed in more than fifty years.

Andrew Shaylors stunning photographs capture the mood and aspirations of a different age, and yet reveal how those hopes and dreams can apply just as much today. As well as being wonderfully nostalgic, the photographs convey the rockabillies love of music and reveal their energetic bordering on frenzied dancing.

This fascinating book includes an engaging account of Shaylors experiences on a road trip to the southern states of America, home of rockabilly icons Hank Williams and Carl Perkins, as well as a chapter on the rockabilly scene today. It also features a history of the rockabilly subculture by Jerry Chatabox, legend of the contemporary rockabilly movement and organiser of the annual Rockabilly Rave, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the thriving rockabilly scene.

Andrew Shaylor is a photographer whose work has appeared in numerous magazines. His book Hells Angels Motorcycle Club was published by Merrell in 2004.
