These New Puritans To Exhibit Custom Built Magnetic Piano

Never one's to follow the vagaries of fashion, These New Puritans constructed the majority of their most recent album, Field of Reeds, with the aid of a unique instrument called the Magnetic Resonator Piano. The MRP was invented by Andrew McPherson, professor of music at University of London's Queen Mary & Westfield College. It's a one off creation, and basically works like a grand piano mixed with a huge theremin – magnetic fields inside the piano's body react to the users movement to colour the sound of the keys being played. The effect ticks all the boxes you could possibly hope for – spooky? check; etheral? check; sounds a bit like the mating call of the Cthulu? check. Now the piano is to go on interactive display at the 180 Gallery, The Strand, from April 15th – 21st. It will be combined with all manner of TNP related musical gadgets that allow punters to interact with elements from Field of Reeds songs, and presumably get a shot on the piano itself.
