Brian d’Souza Explores the Secret Social Lives of Sunflowers for Music To Watch Seeds Grow By
Scottish producer Brian d’Souza (aka Auntie Flo) is launching Season Two of Music To Watch Seeds Grow By with a composition that delves into the hidden world beneath the soil, where sunflowers engage in complex social behaviours invisible to the human eye.
The release explores recent botanical research revealing how sunflowers navigate cooperation and competition through their root systems. When encountering nutrient-rich soil between neighbouring plants, sunflowers deliberately root elsewhere to avoid conflict, demonstrating that coexistence can be a stronger evolutionary drive than dominance.
For the composition, d’Souza captured biodata from his son’s sunflower growing in their London garden, converting it into sound using his modular synthesiser. The data artistically represents different stages of a sunflower’s growth, from first emergence to the underground negotiations between neighbouring plants.
Through minimalist production and field recordings, the piece captures both the patience of root foraging and those subterranean conversations for resources. It’s ambient music reflecting the quieter aspects of plant communication – the things that happen when we’re not watching.
"I chose sunflowers because they embody cooperation over competition," d'Souza explains. "They demonstrate that co-existence can be a stronger evolutionary drive than dominance, challenging our traditional understanding of survival of the fittest."
Following a sold-out first season featuring releases from Woo, Davis Galvin, Graintable, E Ruscha V, Stella Z, and Lapalace the project continues its mission of intertwining music with the process of growth and cultivation, but this time ventures underground.
As with previous releases, this edition comes with its own set of seeds, allowing listeners to grow along to the composition.

“Dedicated to intertwining the serene beauty of music with the nurturing process of planting seeds when the first new signs of life emerge in the growing season. A carefully crafted collection of ambient & minimalist soundscapes, occasionally branching into new-age. A soundtrack for quiet moments of sowing, nurturing, & witnessing the slow, rewarding process of growth. “
