RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY 2011 BOUND FOR TOKYO.
APPLICATION PROCESS LAUNCHES 2 FEBRUARY 2011 – 4 APRIL 2011

Red Bull Music Academy, has announced the application phase for its 2011 edition, which will be hosted by the techno paradise that is Tokyo.
From the 2nd of February, the Academy is inviting all forward-thinking, talented producers, vocalists, DJs, and instrumentalists, to apply to be one of the 60 participants who will be chosen to attend. The application form is available to download from http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com between these dates. The successful applicants will be given the fantastic opportunity to be flown out to Tokyo to take part in one of two fortnight-long terms between October 23 and November 25, 2011
The Red Bull Music Academy began in 1998, uniting up and coming musicians with their critically acclaimed counterparts for workshops and gigs. Each year the Academy visits a new city for two fortnight-long terms and invites a new group of the worlds premier producers, DJs, musicians and engineers to tell their tales on the Academy couch. Previous host cities include Berlin, New York, Sao Paulo, Cape Town, Toronto, Melbourne, Seattle, Barcelona and, last year, London.

As past alumni will testify like Warp’s beat cruncher Hudson Mohawke, Brainfeeder head Flying Lotus, or idiosyncratic Turkish singer Ahu attending the Academy is nothing short of a game changer. Lecturers such as Chuck D, Mark Ronson, Benga and Steve Reich have graced the RBMA couch while the likes of Radio 1s Benji B, DJ Zinc and J Wow of Buraka Som Sistema have all been mentors at previous Academy stops.

Music makers who are keen to apply for the Academy in Tokyo can find all the info they need on www.redbullmusicacademy.com . In the meantime, as the application process is open, those curious can attend one of the introductory Red Bull Music Academy Info Sessions to be held at Red Bull Studios London in March, with some key musical luminaries on the sessions couch.
Dates, lecturers and gigs for London will be announced soon.

EDITORS NOTES

Red Bull Music Academy invites forward-thinking, innovative producers, instrumentalists, vocalists, and DJs, to apply to be part of the Academy in Tokyo. The application form can be downloaded from www.redbullmusicacademy.com and should be sent to Academy HQ together with a music demo between February 2 and April 4, 2011. A jury made up of label heads, music journalists and Academy team members will then carefully deliberate over each application. Two groups of 30 will be selected to represent a broad spectrum of music styles and levels of experience: from singer-songwriters to DIY synth designers and orchestral composers or digital beat makers.

In Tokyo, the selected participants will have the opportunity to hear lectures from pioneering mavericks that paved the way, followed by late night recording sessions putting that breadth of knowledge and inspiration into practice. Then there’s the chance to perform in some of the host city’s most iconic clubs and concert halls.

Last year’s edition in London saw the likes of Detroit legend Moodymann speaking the KDJ gospel, and the Billboard’s favourite city boy Mark Ronson explaining the roots of his sound. There were insights into sound from rap enigma Jay Electronica and American minimalist pioneer Steve Reich alike, while Henrik Schwarz and Bugge Wesseltoft broke down their visionary approach to jazz and house. Electronic originator Cosey Fanni Tutti gave us a window into her synthesis sources, while German mischief-makers Modeselektor crossed techno and hip hop borderlines in an impromptu live session in the lecture hall.
