Domenic Cappello: The ‘Line Out’ Mix

Come rain come shine, for the last (almost) 30 years you’ll find Domenic Cappello propping up the booth at Sub Club.

He’s pretty much part of the furniture: since ’94, alongside fellow resident James Harrigan – better known together as Harri & Dom – he’s been a permanent fixture at the Glasgow-based clubbing institution.

His solo sets are something to marvel at too. His ability to read a crowd is second to none, it doesn’t matter whether he’s playing slo mo electro, an acid banger or a shimmering house cut, he’ll have the room hanging on his every word – or note, should we say.

When it comes to Subby, Dom knows the place inside out now; he knows the faces that come week-in-week-out, how to slowly build the energy and the different directions he can take the night in.

We bring our ‘Line Out’ series back out of retirement for this very special mix: an extended warm up set recorded live from Sub Club back in April. We knew when we saw the name of the mix file – Domenic Cappello Has a Steak Bake with a Wee Bit of Heat In It, He’s Going to Warm It Up at Subculture – we were in for something downright tasty, and we weren’t wrong… Over the course of three hours, listen to a real master at work.

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you

Domenic Cappello, currently in the house doing housework aka checking emails. I’m a Frazzles addict

What does your music sound like?

Sounds like a rainy night in Glasgow

Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?

A half human, half pickle, dancing in a pair of Adidas

Where was the mix recorded?

Live in the Sub Club on a Saturday night when I had an extended warm up

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

In the middle of the Sub Club dancefloor

What should we be wearing?

Whatever the fuck you want

What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

TBH I did it in my dream setting. I love the warm up in the sub club, the place is just dark enough with a small bit of red light and some smoke. People all coming in and the place filling up nicely as the music and atmosphere builds.

Which track in the mix is your current favourite?

Fabrice Lig – Mental Bandwidth

What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?

Anything by Gemini

If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?

Gemini again, I was lucky to play with Spencer a lot back in the day and it would be great to do it again one day.

What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?

It was 2 decks, both different makes – one had a vari-speed, one didn’t – and a made 2 fade mixer. Now it’s 2 x1210’s the clubs old pioneer mixer that they gave me when it was getting thrown out.

What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?

Both

What were the first and last records you bought?

Blondie – Union City Blues and Indio – Phoenix E.R.P. remix.

If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?

Neopolitan Ragu (sunday sauce)

If it was an animal what would it be?

Red wolf

One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?

There is always a way

Upcoming in the world of …

Making lots of music just now, I’ll hopefully get my arse in gear and actually release them.

Anything else we need to discuss?

Fuck Boris
