Weval – 8 Favourite Tracks To Play In Dj Sets

Music

With an intriguing brand of melancholic, synth-laden electronica, we can safely say that Weval neither wobble OR ever fall down and they're among the most stable people you can ever imagine getting behind the decks. The young producers' have got plenty of time on their side and it seems as though they're not willing to waste any in it – they're already putting out a stream of releases and putting on spectacular live shows at an alarming rate. To celebrate their brilliance, we asked them to tell us all about the eight tracks they love to play the most in their DJ sets. You can flick through seven of the tracks by using the list at the top left of the page, the other one is waiting for you right below;

Prince – Bob George

I found this record on the attic of the place where I started out with DJing. It said on a label in the corner of the sleeve that it is a super rare copy because Prince apparently cancelled this album during production. Bob George is a crazy track with a brutal snare. With a loop somewhere halfway we're always eager to squeeze it into our sets.

(Since Prince removed everything from YouTube, we have absolutely no idea where you can get this track…)

See Weval at London's Oval Space on Saturday 3rd October – find out more here. Their EP It'll Be Just Fine/Grow Up is out now via Kompakt.

Mattheis - Four Dimensional Echoes

Mattheis, a Dutch producer whom we met during our first gig 2.5 years ago, is about release his first album. The track Four Dimensional Echoes is a great builder, we use it a lot at the beginning of our sets.

  • Factory Floor : Two Different Ways (Official Video)

We really like the swinging timing of the arpeggio. That together with the super raw acid bassline and lumbering drums… This is the record we want to dance to ourselves.

  • David Douglas - California Poppy (Marius Remix)

David, an old label buddy from Atomnation, made a track which has stuck with us since the beginning. We love the jumpy timing of the chords. Marius made the perfect remix for it, it’s bit more dancefloor orientated.

  • Can - Vitamin C (Official Audio)

Best recorded drums ever. Super playful and dynamic and has that ‘in the room’ sound. It’s a little on the poppy side to play but we made an edit with more repetitive drums.

  • Charanjit Singh - Raga Malkauns - Pitched Down

At the original BPM (145) it’s a bit jumpy and jolly. If you play it at 124bpm or something it becomes awesome and feels so modern (although it’s made in ’83). A track like this can endure for ‘hours’, which is luckily more or less the concept of the album.

  • Chromatics - Tick Of The Clock

We often use soundtracks in our DJ set. Not as a gimmick – musically it can be a very nice tool, for instance as a break or combined with another track that’s more steady for the dance floor. This track becomes completely silent in the middle and then builds again. It’s always thrilling to play. It feels like a risk but if it works (and the audience is still there) it’s great.

  • Brian Eno - Force Marker (Heat Soundtrack)

This big room over the top sound is the sound of the bank robbery soundtrack in Michael Mann’s HEAT (1995). When we play it in a set we add a super dry house beat.
