Turtle – Influences

Music

Multi-talented musician and producer Jon Cooper has single-handedly compiled his latest 4 track EP release under his moniker Turtle. Having already garnered praise from a number of critics, including a selection of 6Music DJs, it appears as though 2014 could be the year of the Turtle. With EP 'Who Knows' being released this week, along with second single 'Opposite of Love', we had a peek inside Turtle's shell to find out more about his musical influences.

Arvo Part - Spiegel Im Spiegel

This is the composition that introduced me to Arvo Part. The piano and violin are so beautiful and carefully composed. So simple yet so powerful.

This is the composition that introduced me to Arvo Part. The piano and violin are so beautiful and carefully composed. So simple yet so powerful.

  • Boards Of Canada - In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country

This track never fails every time to open up magical little doorways in my head. So dense and atmospheric.

  • Philip Glass - Glassworks

This really appeals to my love of minimalism, loops, cycles and patterns. Stunning.

  • Mike Oldfield - Incantations

An amazing piece of multi-layered composition. Oldfield completely blew my mind when i first heard his music as a teenager and his melodies are so imprinted in my brain, that even now when I write new melodies I cant help but think “shit is that one of his” 🙂

  • Old Apparatus - Realise

This is completely amazing. It has everything. The dense noise, the complex rhythms, the atmospheres. So good.

  • Daniel Hope (johann Paul Von Westhoff) - Imitazione Delle Campane

This is truly magical. The rhythm, the notes, the patterns and the performance.

  • Brian Eno - Music For Airports 1/1

This is an amazing piece of work. Deeply reflective and transcendant.

  • Pietro Mascagni: Cavalleria Rusticana - Intermezzo

This brings tears to my eyes every time. Probably one of the most emotively powerful pieces of music I’ve ever heard.

  • Stars Of The Lid - Articulate Silences Part 1

This is such a stunning piece. Love the droning sounds and the atmosphere they create and of course the note placement is bang on.
