Belgian electroacoustic artist Elisabeth Klinck guides us through an eclectic selection of music set to soundtrack the sunshine.

Elisabeth Klinck is a musician, composer and performer. A true artist in every sense of the word – she creates delicate soundscapes with instrumentation and her releases have appeared on the likes of Hallow Ground and Blickwinkel.

Her new album is titled ‘Chronotopia’ and sees her take a different approach to her sound – using her voice alongside her violin to craft beautiful songs with deep, pensive dream like clarity. It’s ethereal and enchanting.

Klinck describes the album as a “playful exploration of time—its fluidity, its constraints, and its influence on how we navigate the world.”

We wanted to understand the musical influences and background behind Elisabeth’s work so we asked for her to nominate a theme and pick some music with which she associates that thread.

She opted to choose music for the sun – a fitting tribute to the summer of the moment.

BODEM - Tranende Meneren

“This is the band of my friend and collaborator Adia Vanherentals. Back in college, I used to find the sound of a saxophone pretty annoying, but then I got to know Adia. Now I can’t get enough of it, every melody she touches feels like silk, she has a way of playing that is authentic and pure, it’s effortless, yet powerful. on a summer day I would love to improvise endless melodies with her.”

  • VASHTI BUNYAN - Swallow Song

“Whenever I listen to this music, I instantly want to move to the countryside and read stories to the donkeys. I see myself baking bread and giggling with the sparrows.”

  • AKI - De Dag Is Traag

“This music makes me want to melt down in the grass and watch birds fly by.”

  • HENDRIK LASURE & Warm Bad - Jonas

“I don’t know how, but my brain made this funny link, whenever I hear this song, it just goes : GET ON YOUR BIKE. It makes me want to ride through the streets of Brussels, which in summer can feel like a voluptuous concrete jungle.”

  • Metà metà - Obatalà

“I love when you can really hear the people playing, especially when it’s a longer song, it feels like they’re saying: ‘no worries darling, we will stick around, you just float around in your thoughts.”

  • FÉLICETTE - Rabbit

“I have a thing with humming and clarinets, especially the crappy sounding ones, their fragility makes me feel tender and vulnerable in a nice way. When I hear this song I just want to hum along and wiggle my head, it makes life feel effortless.”

  • SMOG - I Could Drive Forever

“The way he sings feels so hopeless and desolate that it somehow fills the song with lightness. It reminds me of a strange kind of release that comes when you reach a point of complete mental exhaustion, when you are sick of holding it all together and just let it go. In that surrender, something shifts. The colours slowly come back and you feel light and joyful.”

  • G. PUCCINI / KARAJAN - Madame Butterfly, act 2: coro a bocca chiusa (humming Chorus)

“For a long time, drawn by the drama and the decadent slowness of opera, I thought I would end up in the orchestra. but I discovered I don’t like to sit in the box all day (as a violinist you are always hidden under the stage) This one is an a-typical piece, no grand voices, just the quiet intimacy of humming, pure and modest, if I would ever get a baby I would hum endlessly.”

  • SCHNTZL - Océane Mille

“This song, unlike a lot of piano music which puts me unwillingly in a melodramatic mood, is such a sweet one. I love how it dances calmly around my ears and almost by accident refers to the classical repertoire. It’s playful and cute, yet complex and full of layers. It’s a song you can listen to on repeat without even noticing that it’s the same song all over.”

  • OS TINCOAS = cordeiro de Nana

“This song is ideal for one of those hot, humid summer days in the city—when you drift around in the apartment and can’t be be bothered to put on clothes, knowing they would be sticky in no time, just waiting for the cool of evening to finally arrive.”
