Influences – Sega Bodega

Music

Aside from having a penchant for bright R&B infused electronica that's seen him welcome releases on Week of Wonders and Ryan Hemsworth's Secret Songs, Glasgow's Sega Bodega is also somewhat infatuated with film soundtracks. From Full Metal Jacket and My Neighbour Totoro to the sounds of French arthouse as recommended to us by his mum, Sega Bodega's inspirations draw from all corners of film composition.

Zbigniew Preisner - Les Marionettes

My mum is pretty much responsible for my love of soundtracks and this was one of the first things she showed me that genuinely blew my mind. It’s incredible – it ruins any mood you had before and makes you feel like you’re doing something seriously profound.

  • Zbigniew Preisner - Les Marionettes

My mum is pretty much responsible for my love of soundtracks and this was one of the first things she showed me that genuinely blew my mind. It’s incredible – it ruins any mood you had before and makes you feel like you’re doing something seriously profound.

  • Joe Hisaishi & Studio Ghibli - Path Of The Wind

This is the kind of shit that makes me realise that no matter how cool or future-sounding dance music can get, melody and chords will always squash that. You don’t need anything else but emotion in music.

  • Zbigniew Preisner - Pluie

A couple of years ago my mum handed me a birthday present, which was a CD, and I was like… fuck, better fake my way through this crappy present, and AGAIN she nailed it on the head. It was a live album of Zbigniew Preisner and this song for me (and Damage) were just songs that take the absolute piss. I hadn’t seen the films at that point and it felt like I had already made up about seven other films to this piece. It’s incredible.

  • Lalo Schifrin - Carlos Saura's Tango

This feels like the Justice ‘Genesis’ of film soundtracks. The screaming is fucking amazing.

  • Ismael Lô - Tajabone

This song plays during a pretty big part in the Pedro Almodóvar film All About My Mother (highly recommended) when a woman is on the train going through a tunnel to Barcelona, and the camera pans over the city, and it’s the equivalent (for me) of when Robert Carlyle and Rent Boy do that ‘Born Slippy’ bit in Trainspotting. Super super spot on song for the scene and genuinely the best part of the film.

  • Abigail Mead & Vivien Kubrick - Leonard

This is definitely a song that I wouldn’t be as into if I hadn’t seen the film, but it’s such a fucking perfect piece of music, even just the drip noises. I love everything about this film. Please YouTube: “Full Metal Jacket (1987) – Private. Pyle’s greatest hour” and watch the scene. It’s really good. Stanley Kubrick is just something else, all of the time.

  • Michael Andrews - Boy Moves The Sun

Me and You and Everyone We Know is one of my favourite films. It’s such a lovely film where fuck all happens, but even then you seem to somehow be kind of at the edge of your seat at points. The soundtrack is beautiful, I’m still trying to recreate those synths.

  • Michael Galasso - Baroque

THIS IS SO COOL. The film is Chungking Express and again I’d really recommend seeing it.

  • Johnny Greenwood - Dog House

It’s no surprise that he nails every film soundtrack, but this piece especially makes me stress out. It sounds like it could also be sampled into the coolest hip hop beat, sort of a ‘Tried by 12’ by Taiji Beats type of vibe.
