Influences – Mark E

Music

Mark E is a firm favourite at R$N, both as a DJ and a producer. From his early days making edits and chunky slo-mo house to his more recent ouput on the likes of Running Back, Bokhari, Spectral Sound and his own Merc imprint, a feeling persists of a producer with a hunger to develop his own singular sound. We managed to pin him down and ask him about the tracks that have had the greatest influences on him.

Catch Mark live at Lovebox on July 18th and buy his LP 'Product Of Industry' here.

Jill Scott - Slowly Surely (Theo Parrish Mix)

This is everything, such a powerful deep track which evolves subtly, leaves you expecting a big kick to drop but beautifully doesn’t do anything of the sort.

A really good example of how a record changed my musical direction.

I could pick 10 Theo Parrish tracks.

  • Silent Servant - Invocation Of Lust

I picked this because over the last few years I’ve become more into techno, and this one is a good example of the kind of techno I like,
    pulsating, driving, moody.

  • Glenn Underground - Jaz Love 2

Not especially this song but most of GU’s output is of the highest quality. I couldn’t do an influences list without mentioning GU.

  • Omar-S - In Side My Head

One of those records that is just a continuous loop which does just that gets ” in your head “. Rough raw beat, deep soulful sample.

  • Frankie Knuckles - The Whistle Song (Virgin Records 1991)

RIP Frankie, long live House music.

  • Maddkatt Courtship Iii - Cosmic Pop

I still play tracks off this LP, so ahead of its time, Felix da Housecatt at his very best.

  • Salt City Orchestra - The Book (Bookin Da Beats)

This track signifies that whole deep house sound and period. There were so many records i could have picked here.

  • Minos Pour Main Basse [Sur La Ville] - Le Patron Est Devenu Fou [Hq]

This whole album SUPER DISCOUNT in the late 90’s still remains an all time favourite LP. Really got into that French sound around this time, looped up disco feel.

  • Parkway Rhythm - Working Girl (Club Dub)

I wanted to put CITY DREAMS by Apartment 4/4 on Parkwest, but its not on youtube. But this is also a killer track on sister label Park Way also by Mark 7, everything he does exudes style, over the last few years he has been a great inspiration.

  • Amp Fiddler - Eye To Eye (Jan Mix)

Couldn’t complete a list like this without adding KDJ, combined with Amp Fiddler perfect dream team.
