Kamera is the artist name of James Welsh, a relatively new producer who has recently broken through the noise barrier and made himself heard. Last year he released his debut EP for Phantasy, Erol Alkan's renowned label, and has since followed it up with a second. We thought it would be wise to query him as to his musical inspirations.

Squarepusher - My Red Hot Car

Hard Normal Daddy was one of the albums that really got me excited about electronic music but this track from Go Plastic was Squarepusher’s masterpiece for me, in terms of melody and song structure. As much as I like the jazz stuff… This, for me, is Squarepusher at his best.

  • Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch Ii

Sabres were a group I discovered through my love of other Warp artists. This track is so bizarre, interesting and addictive. It’s truly unique. I would later be lucky enough to consider Jagz Kooner a good friend and my go to guy for around the clock ProTools support.

  • Autechre - Gantz Graf

I bought this track with the DVD from Waterloo Records in Austin Texas. It was massively influential for me at the time and I tried desperately to make sounds that were in anyway similar to this track.

  • Telefon Tel Aviv - Map Of What Is Effortless

Telefon Tel Aviv bridged my love of interesting electronics and good songwriting. This whole album is excellent and I still dig out the triple vinyl every now and then.

  • The Fucking Champs - Esprit De Corpse

Champs IV was a big album for me. Great riffs and structure without a need for the posturing nonsense of a front person. When I was spending a lot of time in Texas this was a metal album that even Austin hippies appreciated.

  • Trans Am - Tesco Vs Sainsburys

Saw Trans AM a few times, most memorably (I think) at the Brudenell Club in Leeds. This is a more recent track. They’ve basically been really good for ages.

  • Dajae - Is It All Over My Face (Green Velvet's Imagine The Vocals Mix)

Another track that seems to make its way into a lot of my sets. The vocal is pretty lary and I don’t play many tracks with big vocals so it’s a good one to throw in there. The 12″ is in a right state. Luckily I ripped it before it got too bad.

  • Caucasian Boy - Northern Lights

My mate bought this 12″ in Chicago and left it at my house. I’ve played it at probably 60 percent of my gigs since then. Its like 2 good tracks rolled into 1. Proper agro acid!

  • Mmm - Donna

Sometimes when making a track I’ll just mess about on one piece of gear for 10 mins and see what happens. I don’t know if that’s how this track was made, it sounds like it could’ve been a Sherman filter or something but that’s the vibe I get from it. You can hear what sounds like realtime, excited playing of a piece of kit.

  • Steve Moore - Intro & Credits

Jamie Russel got me into this when we were at my studio in Mallorca, full of croquettes and gin, making soundtrack type stuff on my new Prophet. Been trying to do a lot of stuff like this recently. Make a track with no drums and maybe add drums later if you feel like it (or want to sell any records).
